Hostel 3 Moves Forward, Sans Eli Roth

Posted by Joe Ngo (joe@filmschoolrejects.com) on June 25, 2008

Eli Roth Hostel

The twisted mind that brought us Hostel and Hostel 2, will not be back for part 3.  Despite the successes of the first two films, and the talks of a third even before the second hit theaters, it’s unclear now what direction Hostel will be taking.  There’s even some speculation that Hostel 3 might go direct to dvd (shudder).

Roth’s torture series was somewhat groundbreaking when it first hit theaters.  To me, it seemed more real than Saw or other films like that.  Hostel was something I felt could happen in real life.. something that might even be going on today!  Who would ever even think of making a movie where people pay to kill other people?  Ok, maybe you would, but I know that I wouldn’t.

I also feel that there are others who could make a bloody torture movie, but I’m not sure that someone will be able to make it work the same way Roth did. His involvement in the project is unknown as of right now, but he will be not be directing it for sure.

Will Hostel 3 work without Eli Roth?

I think the days of Hostel are over. “Torture porn” (God I hate that title) seems played out, with only Saw seemingly doing okay. It’s time for Roth to move onto something else… like maybe the 20 projects he’s announced in the past and hasn’t gotten around to doing anything on.
