Harry Potter: Victim of Economic Collapse? Nah…

To hell with Harry Potter’s battle with Voldemort, critics are now fearing that an economic depression may cast a dark spell over the film franchise. The credit crunch has already forced Disney to remove its attachment from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the next chapter of the Chronicles of Narnia series. Following Warner Bros. decision to back away from the rest of Philip Pulman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, after the bomb of The Golden Compass, it would seem that no fantasy epics are safe from the cold reality of empty wallets. Or here’s a thought. Maybe if Prince Caspian and The Golden Compass didn’t suck they would have stuck around.

The Independent now claims Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves stated that Warner Bros. is worried about the prospects for the last three films, since there are no more books to be released that would drive anticipation for the films. Allow me to name my response Adam Sweeney and the Wasteful Worrying over Wizards.

If you’re under the impression that the Harry Potter film franchise is going to tank now you must be smoking some damn good bud. The films have already pocketed 4.5 billion dollars in ticket sales, and that’s accounting for some of the weakest chapters in the series. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is guaranteed to make money, listen to the fans who are giddy in anticipation. And everyone and their grandmother will see The Deathly Hallows, the same way people rushed to see Revenge of the Sith. You HAVE to see the last film, or in this case two films. They could have gerbils dressed in wizard robes and it’d still break the 200 million mark. So put your wands back in your pants, everyone. Harry Potter will save Hogwarts on-screen.

You can read the article by the Independent here to see what all the fuss is about.

Do you think the Harry Potter film franchise could disappear? What is your favorite Harry Potter film so far?

  • HArry Potter is still very popular and relevant. There's nothing to fret over.
  • It's not going to disappear. Or is it disapparate? Either way the movies have not struggled like the Golden Compass did, and though I was surprised by Disney dumping Narnia, the quality of the Potter flicks greatly overshadows both of the other franchises.
  • Adam, Harry Potter Series will be worth my money when the Deathly Hollows comes. You know why? It is because the master of fantasy (Guillermo Del Toro) behind Hellboy and Pan's Labyrith will be producing the last 2 movies. Who can master a full dark ambience to the story. Unless Peter Jackson steps in do something better.

WB shouldn't be worried, all Harry-fanatics will still be lining up to see all of the Harry Poo Poo's trilogy. With the huge fanbase for Harry it wouldn't be a suprise that the up-tight wallets of parental geeks and nerds will be selling-out his movie tickets in a matter of seconds. Faster than Kevin Carr finishing that big tub of Dyer's Super Chunk Cookie Dough Ice cream in his freezer. (Sorry Kev need an example, so you're first one to come in mind. lol!)
  • Oh, there is no question that Deathly Hallows will be entertaining. The Harry Potter franchise is getting better with each film. And you're a bold customer for ripping Kevin Carr. Oh wait, his podcast does say he is fat. Hmm ...

uhm....Guillermo Del Toro is not producing them. David Heyman (the same producer of the previous 6) is. I think ure thinking of The Hobbit my friend, which is where Del Toro and Jackson are both involved. Or did I miss that news and my fellow compatriot is producing them??
  • Exactly. Ten points awarded to Gryffindor and MackB for using common sense. An additional ten points for making a Harry Potter reference.
  • I think WB forgot what the REMEMBRALL is used for. Maybe we can get Mrs. Wesley to pay them a visit via a Howler. Where is a Deluminator when you need one? I think JK should send them a Sneakoscope. This is the only way for us to know the truth!

  • 50 points for Jackie and Gryffindor! Keep this up and you will be headmaster before you know it. :)

If you're smoking damn good bud, and the only reaction you have is worry over whether the remaining Harry Potter films can succeed without new books to peak interest, your drug dealer sold you oregano...
