Hannibal Rising: A Beginning?

Posted by Zachary Payne (zachary@filmschoolrejects.com) on January 2, 2007

We all know the story of Hannibal Lecter, or do we? In red dragon we learned who he was, in Silence of the Lambs we learned how it was done, but in the latest chapter of the story Hannibal Rising we are taken back to the beginning, to a young Hannibal around the end of World War II.

The story takes us to Eastern Europe. Hannibal, as a young child, witnesses his parents violent death from only a few short steps away, leaving his baby sister in his care. Alone and without support of any kind, they take shelter in a soviet orphanage home. Hannibal flees to Paris to find that his uncle has died, and his beautiful Japanese widow welcomes him with open arms. Given his interest in sciences he is accepted into a medical school that provide him with the proper skills to exact justice on the war criminals that seem to haunt him every singe day.

Directed by Peter Webber (Girl With a Pearl Earring), Written by Thomas Harris and starring Gaspard Ulliel, Gong Li, Rhys Lfans, Richard Brake and Kevin McKidd.

Coming February 9th, 2007 from MGM Entertainment.
