Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr is no stranger to low rent horror movies, but now she’s taking the next step — into the fishy world of Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D.

Having starred in such thrilling fare as House at the End of the Drive and Somebody Help Me, the 24-year old actress will now move on to play Kelly, a hot young townie caught up in the excitement of the co-eds who have descended upon the area for spring break. This news was originally reported by E’s Marc Malkin and has since been confirmed by us via a rep from The Weinstein Company, who is funding the remake of the 1978 thriller.

The film will follow the tale of Lake Victoria, a seemingly harmless lake that is rocked by a sudden underwater tremor. The tremor sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating fish. Now a local sheriff (Elizabeth Shue) must band together the town’s folk and “risk everything” to try and destroy the town’s carnivorous aquatic residents. Ving Rhames will also star as one of her deputies and Adam Scott will star as a Navy diver sent in to help rescue the town. Richard Dreyfus and Dina Meyer will also star.

Piranha 3D begins shooting later this month in Lake Havasu, Arizona. It is scheduled for a March 19, 2010 release.
