Gone Baby Gone star Amy Ryan, who has generated a lot of buzz during the awards season, has just been cast alongside Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear to star in Paul Greengrass’ new film The Green Zone. The film, based on Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s book Imperial Life in the Emerald City chronicles the Iraq war. Greengrass has turned Chandrasekaran’s memoirs into a fictional story that takes place in “the Green Zone” where U.S. leaders make drastic decisions that affect the lives of their soldiers.

According to Variety, Ryan will play a “New York Times foreign correspondent sent to Iraq to investigate the U.S. government’s (weapons of mass destruction) claims” in Iraq. Damon and Kinnear will play CIA officers also involved with the search for WMDs.

The United 93 and Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum director is perhaps known best for his use of shaky-cams in his film, and I have a suspicion that this film will be no different.

Amy Ryan is a relatively new name. She’s been a recurring cast member on HBO’s “The Wire” for the last few seasons, but her breakthrough came this past year in Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, for which she’s earned a Golden Globe nomination. Putting her alongside dynamic actors such as Damon and Kinnear will only liven up the tension that Greengrass will inevitably thrive in creating. Hopefully, this film’s climax will involve the hilariously ironic image of George Bush standing in front of a giant “Mission Accomplished” banner.

The Green Zone began shooting this week and is set for a 2009 release.
