Ghostbusters 3 Rumors Get Slimed

Posted by Josh Radde (josh@filmschoolrejects.com) on August 1, 2008

Ghostbusters HottieIf you heard a rumor that went something like this: “the cast of 40 Year-Old Virgin will be the new Ghostbusters” and thought is was too good to be true? Well, it is.

Dread Central ran a story saying that the original cast (who got together to record the vocals for the forthcoming Ghostbusters video game recently) would come back for another film in which they would “hand over their proton packs” to the likes of Seth Rogen, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and Romany Malco. /Film responded with a report saying that Dread’s rumor has already been refuted. Anything beyond the video game has not been planned.

So for a moment, fans of the series could rejoice in the prospect of a new Ghostbusters franchise starring the hottest comedic actors working in Hollywood. The reality, though, is that I don’t think I (personally) would like a Ghostbusters franchise not headlined by Murray and Aykroyd. There are too many reboots, remakes, and late, late sequels these days that I think the Ghostbusters door needs to remain closed. I love the idea of a video game, and maybe if this one is successful we can get a new franchise (I don’t like that from the looks of the game footage online you can only play as one Ghostbuster, though) of video games.

Of course it all depends on getting the right people, the right story, and generating the proper amount of interest (which I don’t think will be a problem) all in line. As much as I would LIKE to see a Ghostbusters movie again, we have to remember that Ghostbusters 2 wasn’t EXACTLY a masterpiece. The jury is still out on this one, so those of you who got your hopes up thinking a Ghostbusters movie was right around the corner, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer?

I know this makes our editor Neil (whose Digg avatar is the Ghostbuster logo) a little sad, but hang in there Neil, there’s still at least some Ghostbuster goodness coming your way via XBox. Provided Activision gets their sh*t together and releases it finally.

Would you want a Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast or new members?

I think it would be kinda cool if it started with the old crew handing off to a new one.

good.im sick of seeing these lame remakes.to tire another quote I thought the writers strike was over? i wish they would fire all these guys and bring in new fresh talented writers into the biz.Other than the dark knight i havent seen a real good movie in a while

It would be good if it was R, otherwise the potential for humour would be on a more Evan Almighty par.

On one hand, I'd like to see a passing of the torch. On the other, it wouldn't be The Ghostbusters if that happend (remember that lame ass Ghostbusters Extreme cartoon? Ugh). If they were to make a part 3 with new characters, I'd like to see the original guys basically running the movie, with the new guys taking a backseat until the team realizes at the end of the movie, after dispatching the main beastie, that they're too old for this kinda stuff, and then hand off the reigns to the new guys for a Ghostbusters 4 (new team, but the old guys are kept on as consultants). That way you'd get to see another Ghostbusters movie that sends the team off proper.

And David? I totally agree with you. Start from scratch in the Hollywood writer pool.
  • @ Chris

That would be really cool - especially if they just made another Ghostbusters movie with the original cast (although we'd complain about that, too, probably) with no mention of new guys at all. Spend the entire movie fighting this one main ghost, and have them take it down at the end but decide they need to retire.

Then, in a cameo, have the guys from Apatow-land come in an interview for positions. The montage of them adlib interviewing would be classic, and you wouldn't have to deal with them for the rest of the movie.
  • I think Neil wants to get slimed by the chick in that picture.

    "She slimed me."

if they have a story to tell... cool... but i don't want to see a "passing of the proton pack"... same characters and either new or old cast.
  • I wouldn't mind a passing of the proton pack. That's what would make the
    movie work.

i think the hand over is neesscary...igon was seth rogens dad in knocked up sooo it really makes sense to have him be his dad yet again. the only thing is who will play rick moranis role.....my vote goes to rob schneider hands down. i thought of this last night and too me hes the best placement for the role.

Seth Rogen is a doofus. That's the best way I can put it. I have'nt laughed at anything he's done, and so he remains an over-rated dumbass to me. As for a Ghostbusters 3 - I say that it would work quite well. They're older, sure, but that might even add to the charm of the movie. Time is running out though...
