Get Smart: Five New TV Spots, More Silliness

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 20, 2008

Steve Carell in Get Smart

As you know, I generally don’t care what anyone else thinks when it comes to certain movies. And Get Smart, the big screen adaptation of the 1960s classic TV show, is one of those films. On top of being a huge fan of Steve Carell — I even liked Dan in Real Life, a lot — I am also a fan of director Peter Segal (Tommy Boy) and of the rest of the cast, which includes Anne Hathaway, Dwayne (Please, don’t call me “The Rock) Johnson, Alan Arkin and Terrence Stamp. The pieces are in place, the source material is a proven winner and I think that if audiences can get past some of the silliness, they will see that Get Smart has a lot of potential. I mean, it is based on characters by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry — last time I checked, they’ve done some good stuff.

In order to assist you in getting yourself into the Get Smart mood, WB has released the following five TV spots. The film itself will be in theaters on June 20th. Enjoy!

“No Escape”

“Plain Smart”

“World-Class”

“Same Page”

“Super Agents”

Neil, (where do I begin) I’m suprised as a long time fan of Get Smart you don’t see the real big flaws in this.
First the actor that’s playing Seigfreid looks nothing like the Original and dosnt even have a German accent. How can you have a Seigfreid without a German accent????? (If you don’t eat your meat, how can you have any pudding?!!!)

Carrell, looks like a good Smart but has decided not to try and duplicate Don’s sqweeky high pitch voice, instead he’s just playing the same character he plays in “The Office”. I’m really let down by this and its becoming obvious to me that Steve Carrell really dosnt have any range as a film actor…all the famous one liners fall soo flat when he speaks.

The casting bright spot seems to be Ann Hatthaway. She’s a great choice for 99.

And then we have Dwayne Johnson as “agent 23″ and Mentor to Smart…
This is where I cry BULLSHIT!, Maxwell Smart never had a Mentor and was allways Controls Best agent. And Agent 23 was mostly allways undercover in a footlocker or in a mailbox, not to mention dwayne johnson has very little comedic timing.

This film starts off with a flashback that shows a fat Maxwell Smart as a loser kid wanting to be a secret agent, then flashforwards, as we see Max as an agent in trainning. Then,,,,, (add tired script idea no 6).
“All” the agents in Control are systematically killed off and there’s nobody left but Max, 99 and 23.

As a true fan of Get Smart, I’m totally boycotting this film. Its a poor script and a horrible way to pay tribute to Don Adams and the Franchise.

They missed it by 10 miles.

790, while there are some flaws, it’s not as bad as you make out. Yes, the character of Seigfreid is terrible and there a couple of problems with the story, but there are a lot of laughs and good action in the film. They have changed some things from the TV series, which do work. Plus, you have got to be kidding if you think Carrell should have imitated Adams’ voice. That would have been brutal.

Well, I just can’t get past how un Smart-like he sounds delivering the classic one liners. Carrell IMO, really shows he has no range as a comedic actor in the trailers. He’s just that same character from the office.
And I really hate that he’s a wannabee agent and not a bumbling super agent.

They picked a great 99, but yeah seriously Siegfreid casting choice is so bad I have to wonder if the Director really was a fan. Siegfreid was the most popular villian on that show. He wasn’t even going to be a reoccuring character but Berne Kopell didn’t such a great job the producers fell in love with his accent. Looks like they got Stahker wrong too. He’s some little fat guy…. Wtf?

I’m seriously boycotting this film….

Don Ward says:

Just saw “Get Smart” with my wife. I’m a great fan of the original, my wife never was. She slept, I dozed a little. But, I enjoyed most of the film and the audience laughed out loud a lot. Except for 99 and “The Chief”, the casting was very poor. Biggest disappointments from the hilarious TV show: Larrabee, Shtocker and Siegfried. The story was good enough that anyone of a half-dozen SNL comedians could have made you think you were watching Don Adams, especially Adam Sandler. They “Missed it, by that much!”
