Get a Hi-Res Look at the Transformers!
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 10, 2007
Last week /Film showed off 50 pictures from Michael Bay’s Transformers, almost none of which had actual Transformers in them. They were all pictures of Shia Labeouf and the very hot Megan Fox. Today, Mr. Bay himself has unleashed some extremely cool hi-res shots of the film’s real stars on his blog. Take a peek below…

Ugh. So ugly.
May 11th, 2007 at 1:26 am
None of these really look like anything. Just a jumbled mess. Not what I was expecting.
May 11th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Nothing remotely elegant… in other words, I frustrating mess to look at.

Is it just me, or does Megatron really resemble Superman’s Doomsday? LOL

ugly. why do all the decepticons look the same? I’m not going to be able to tell what’s going on during the movie.
Blackout, Ironhide and Jazz look cool though.

All I see is a mass of messed up spikey bits. It looks awful there. I mean look at Starscream lol, you can just make out a tiny blob that is his head.

I understand the had to “modernize” the look but the robots are not an improvement at all. They look like the unfinished 3CPO robot. Oh well. I’m sure someone it going to like it. Not me.

I believe the idea here was to make the robots look “realistic”. While realism in such a movie is far from applicable, it should still make a little bit of sense how a robot, that can run, walk, punch, balance and gesture with high motor skills, will transform into a fighter jet and take off into the skies. Yes, again, I know this isn’t realistic to begin with. Nevertheless, how are you going to have them transform and take a probable shape in each stage?
Most of the decepticons transform into airborne vehicles. Streamlined forms are mandatory, here. Aerodynamics and streamlinging set very limited constraints on the shape of the humanoid robot form. Thats how you get this “jumbled mess” that the Decepticons depict on the images.
In order for a car to drive, however, all you need is an engine and wheels. This leaves far more options for robot shape design. Thus, the Autobot models all look fare more discernible.
Lastly you have to consider that cheap car manufacturer advertisement does not set any standards for how cars or any other vehicle can transform and how they look like in their transformed shape. You are going into this movie with the wrong expectations. This isn’t another cartoon version of Transformers: The Movie. Where DO you put the side mirrors? Where DO you put the engine? Where DO you place the huge chassy of a giant truck or the gigantic, or the body of a fighter jet?
And you didn’t really expect Megatron to have a face with a mouth like a human, did you? Unless he can make his face melt in order to allow lip movement, that would have been a bit silly, right?
So don’t complain. Appreciate the fact that someone put some thought into it instead of just slapping something together to make a few stubborn hardcore Transformers cartoon series fans happy.

These deigns are hideous. It seems like just a vain demo of CG modeling skills. “See how many complex forms we can animate!” Like bundles of junk tied together with rubber bands. The charm of the Transformers was that even when in robot mode, they still had some of the features of their vehicle forms. These just look too monstrous, even the Autobots look evil– why give Jazz claws? Unfinished junkyard sculptures.

Most of those pics are the pre-earth forms before they take on the look of earth vehicles to fit in.

this is not even CLOSE 2 how the transformers look. hollywood does it again. way 2 screw up my childhood cartoons

This is the same thought every time I see the designs: they look like they make so much more sense than any of the previous TF designs.
They look like they stand, pose, dodge and attack with ease. They look like no matter what position, they can actually stand and not get knocked on their ass by a light wind. They look like they could actually exist in this world.
The movie is going to suck some balls but maybe Michael Bay will do right.

Message to people complaining…. Please ! common guys ! stop living in the 80’s !! I’m a HUGE HUGE G1 fan, got all the toys etc at home but common you’ve got to understand the story here and see that movie like it is ! A 2007 version of the Transformers ! It will never replace the G1 for sure, we all have our memories of these ;) But this is made to look real in our world, the transformers are alien !! That,s why they have that look, it’s no more a little cartoon for the kids that isn’t realistic at all, this is made to look like real vehicules and aliens ! AND IT IS COOL! These images are so hot ! Please take a look at the new book and comics out, The Ghosts Of Yesterday , It’s only $7 and you’ll understand the story here, it,s areal cool story, one of the best ever for the transformers line ! (and I have a lot of the comics beleive me )
So stop complaining, do like I do : play with your G1 , look at the old comics and movie , have fun with your memories but please common , move on and enjoy this NEW Generation ! It’s so cool and we are so lucky to get sucj a huge movie for the Transformers !! hope there’s more coming soon, I can’t wait to see that one! Live is evolving, so are the Transformers and now all your kids will have good memories like we all have !!
A true Fan of the transformers !!!

These do look kinda cool.
I don’t like how thin the wrists are on ANY of the characters (ok, I have some robotics experience, hence why I loved the cartoon and am really hyped about the movie)
I simply can’t wait.
They better, BETTER have allot of good CGI in the movie. I mean the cartoon was almost 90% scenes with them in there in one form or another, hardly any human-only stuff.
With a concept like this, and using technology today… I don’t want some love story or concept so bad, sucks so much that it pulls the moon out of orbit.
So to me the transformer characters ARE the plot.
I hope that the final production that’s released reflects this concept. I’ll see it, and grab the HD-DVD the second it comes out.

These photos are pretty cool I just… I want to see them in action!! They’re just plain ole white studio shots, but I want to see these damn T’formers kickin’ some ass on the streets not just posing!

I too want to see them on the streets not just the mockup drawings. I think this movie is going to be a letdown after all the hype.

man…lots & lots of whiners…like somebody up there said, stop living in the 80s! appreciate these designs for what they are, a realistic interpretation of how a TF might look in “real life”!

G1 or not aside. They’re so complex externally is hard get a real bold statement out of any of the decepticons. A splash of colour would have done wonders. I’m of the school of though that they should have kept it as close to original as possible .It shouldn’t just change because it’s 2007. My son who’s four loves G1 Transformers and they would’ve kicked ass in 3D. Optimus prime looks bearable. There is a Citroen TV ad that shows how it should have been done.

This proves that it could have been possible to do a realistic interpretation without
stylising the sh*t out of things for the sake of a new merchandise range.
