Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 10, 2007

Last week /Film showed off 50 pictures from Michael Bay’s Transformers, almost none of which had actual Transformers in them. They were all pictures of Shia Labeouf and the very hot Megan Fox. Today, Mr. Bay himself has unleashed some extremely cool hi-res shots of the film’s real stars on his blog. Take a peek below…

I'm off to make some wallpapers out of these.

    Cheers!

    Decepticons FTW!
  • Ugh. So ugly.
  • None of these really look like anything. Just a jumbled mess. Not what I was expecting.
  • Nothing remotely elegant... in other words, I frustrating mess to look at.

Is it just me, or does Megatron really resemble Superman's Doomsday? LOL

ugly. why do all the decepticons look the same? I'm not going to be able to tell what's going on during the movie.
Blackout, Ironhide and Jazz look cool though.
  • All I see is a mass of messed up spikey bits. It looks awful there. I mean look at Starscream lol, you can just make out a tiny blob that is his head.

I understand the had to "modernize" the look but the robots are not an improvement at all. They look like the unfinished 3CPO robot. Oh well. I'm sure someone it going to like it. Not me.
  • I believe the idea here was to make the robots look "realistic". While realism in such a movie is far from applicable, it should still make a little bit of sense how a robot, that can run, walk, punch, balance and gesture with high motor skills, will transform into a fighter jet and take off into the skies. Yes, again, I know this isn't realistic to begin with. Nevertheless, how are you going to have them transform and take a probable shape in each stage?

Most of the decepticons transform into airborne vehicles. Streamlined forms are mandatory, here. Aerodynamics and streamlinging set very limited constraints on the shape of the humanoid robot form. Thats how you get this "jumbled mess" that the Decepticons depict on the images.

In order for a car to drive, however, all you need is an engine and wheels. This leaves far more options for robot shape design. Thus, the Autobot models all look fare more discernible.

Lastly you have to consider that cheap car manufacturer advertisement does not set any standards for how cars or any other vehicle can transform and how they look like in their transformed shape. You are going into this movie with the wrong expectations. This isn't another cartoon version of Transformers: The Movie. Where DO you put the side mirrors? Where DO you put the engine? Where DO you place the huge chassy of a giant truck or the gigantic, or the body of a fighter jet?

And you didn't really expect Megatron to have a face with a mouth like a human, did you? Unless he can make his face melt in order to allow lip movement, that would have been a bit silly, right?

So don't complain. Appreciate the fact that someone put some thought into it instead of just slapping something together to make a few stubborn hardcore Transformers cartoon series fans happy.
