Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for the Fantastic Fest 2009 opening night film, Gentlemen Broncos, from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess. And if you’re down with the twisted, odd mind of Hess, this is going to be right up your alley. In fact, I would argue that this trailer marks his return to his Dynamite days, whereas Nacho Libre was just a diversion.

In Broncos, Michael Angarano stars as a young boy whose home-schooled, sheltered life leads him to a life of writing fantasy science fiction. And while attending a camp for aspiring writers, he has a story stolen by a world famous sci-fi writer, played by Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement. Based on what I’m seeing in this trailer, Clement looks to once again be at the top of his game. As well, get a load of Sam Rockwell playing several ridiculous characters. Color me excited for the opening night of Fantastic Fest in September.

Gentlemen Broncos will debut at Fantastic Fest on September 24, and will then be in theaters on October 30th. Check out the trailer below, or see it in HD on Apple.com.

  • This looks miles above Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre...plus Jemaine. Wahoo!
  • Wait...is Jemaine channeling Alan Rickman?
  • Brilliant.
  • I expect a spoiler-free review of "Trick 'r Treat" if any of you attend the fest. :)
