My personal distaste for this summer’s biggest bust, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer has been well documented, so it seems trite to rehash it now. Then again, news coming from our good friends at Screenrant today is enough to push me back over the edge of reason, back to a place where Jessica Alba is less than hot and a badass silver dude is turned into nothing but a one trick pony.

That’s right, I said it. The ending of Rise of the Silver Surfer was one of the most anti-climactic action finale’s that I have seen in quite some time. And just like Spider-Man 3, it involved the untimely demise of one of the comic franchise’s more interesting characters. Yet, despite the way this year’s film ended, it seems as if there is still a Silver Surfer off-shoot in the works, and Galactus will also make a triumphant return. And as Director Tim Story explains, he may be less of a big gaseous mass and more of the mega-devourer of worlds that comic fans are used to:

“We decided early on that we would not bring him to life completely as you might think of him in the comics, being a man with the suit and the helmet and everything else,” Story said during his commentary. One of the main reasons is because we always knew that there was going to be a Silver Surfer 1, or they were going to make a spin-off of the Silver Surfer. If I gave up everything in this movie, then that movie wouldn’t have much to go on. Knowing that I wasn’t going to do it that early, I wanted to keep it fairly open to interpretation by the director who would do that one. So the idea of the cloud and everything made pretty good sense to us.”

Basically, this is Tim Story explaining why they pussed out on making Galactus more than just an interstellar fart cloud. Fans were all jacked up by how cool Doug Jones looked on his Silver surfboard that they didn’t even notice the painfully bad portrayal of Galactus.

Alas, that mistake has been made and there is nothing that we can do about it now. Maybe Alex Proyas (I, Robot) can make something of the Silver Surfer spin-off that he is in talks to direct. Either way, that Silver Surfer won’t take flight until 2009, pending a massive strike of course.
