G-Force Downs Harry Potter With $32 Million Weekend

This weekend we had an upset at the box office. G-Force, that Disney movie with the funny animals, took down Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The animals won Friday and Saturday and that was enough to win the whole weekend.
And in a further sign that the North American public is totally in the mood for fun entertainment right now, The Ugly Truth brought in $27 million. Orphan only brought in $12.7 million, evidence that audiences are in no mood to be scared or depressed at the moment.
As for G-Force, it came in perhaps a little higher than expected. But It wasn’t that much higher than expected. I guess the real question is why the Harry Potter movie dropped 61 percent from last weekend, given that the buzz was so good! Maybe it’s because the people who really wanted to see it rushed to theaters in the first week — and that was all she wrote. I notice this latest Harry Potter movie has already made $221,834,000.
And Bruno’s freefall continues to amaze. It fell to tenth place and $2,719,000, a 67.3% drop. You would have thought the drop would be more modest than that right now, but it’s so obvious that Sacha Baron Cohen pushed the limits too far this time and grossed everyone out. Sixty-seven percent – man, that drop is beyond embarrassing.
As an aside — can you believe The Hangover is still hanging around in the Top Ten? They’re up to $247,077,000 overall.
