Funny People: Get Ready to Laugh Your Dick Off

Director Judd Apatow’s Funny People is nearing release, and as such, the online presence is stepping up. In this case we have a website, LaughYourDickOff.com, that is dedicated to the character Randy, portrayed by Aziz Ansari. Little is known of his character other than that he is a stand-up comedian. I’m sure at some point I read that he room’s with Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill but that could be scurillous. We do know that Aziz is hilarious and appears to be taking over my TV screen, with ‘Scrubs’ and ‘Flight of the Conchords’, alongside film appearances in Observe and Report and I Love You, Man. An impressive year to say the least.

Based on the clips — one of which can be seen below — Randy is hilarious. His stand-up is fresh and original and the clip about buying a litre of Jack Daniels etc. is golden. I am quite the connoisseur of stand-up and I would watch this, buy the ticket and buy the DVD.

I must not be the only one, as Aziz has tweeted that he’s doing a Randy section on a show that will be taped tomorrow, for DVD release in the future, possibly a Funny People DVD extra.

I am eagerly awaiting Apatow’s third film, and feel that it could be the funniest film of the year, right alongside Bruno, obviously. Clearly Aziz is hilarious and the world is about to find out, so maybe, just maybe, we can get a comedy headlined by Mr. Ansari in the coming year. I know I’d be on board.

    i think the stuff is funny, yet i do agree with people who are bashing it as lame at the same time, because it's very convenient to hide behind the 'well it's supposed to be shitty - it's META' defense as opposed to coming up fresh steeze.

    He actually taped the special last night. I was there and it was great.
    The Randy portion was really short compared to his Aziz stuff, but was hilarious and was totally not a cop-out from doing fresh material. In fact, the Randy portion was merely an encore. His show stood on its on without it. I think he's just having fun with Randy, and I think people need to recognize that Randy is a character. He even prefaced Randy by saying that he may say some offensive things, but that's not him, it's his character.

  • i said fresh steeze, not material. steeze is roughly another way of saying approach or style. i know it's not a cop out from doing fresh material because some of it is just him doing his same jokes as RAAANDY (see my original post). i know Randy is a 'character' and therein begins the apologist slippery slope. 'well he's just a character that's supposed to be a play on blah blah blah. he's just having fun.'

    i've been a fan of Aziz since i saw him on Human Giant and i'm familiar with his act. i know he's better than this RAAAANDY stuff, but it's too late and now he's gonna be stuck with it.
