Forest Whitaker May Join Stallone’s ‘Expendables’

Not exactly how we missed it a few months back, but it appears that we are way late in reporting that Forest Whitaker is circling the wagons on Sly Stallone’s hotly anticipated thriller The Expendables.

Whitaker would play the CIA liaison for a group of mercenaries (played by Stallone, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Jason Statham) who are clandestinely sent to South America to overthrow a dictator.

The film sounds awesome, as many of my colleagues around the web have already noted. Great cast. Stallone’s follow-up effort to a kickass Rambo film. I don’t really see anything going wrong.

On another note, The Hollywood Reporter is also saying to day that a Nu Image/Millennium spokesperson told them that the casting of Sandra Bullock, which we previously reported, is “merely wishful thinking.” That’s code for “the deal just isn’t done yet.”

  • But Neil, we did report it way back in 2008! December 24th to be exact.
  • I'm not gonna lie, that movie sounds so cool I think I just jizzed in my pants. But I'm not a huge fan of Stallone in his directing rolls. I mean, there's Rocky. But the again, there's Rocky IV.
  • Maybe it's cool.
  • This will be the Inglorious Basterds that Tarantino wishes he was making.

Actually Coutore wasn't very good in Scorpion King 2. In fact he was pretty terrible. But then again it WAS Scorpion King 2.

As long as nobody writes off the material as campy due to the cast, it should be good. I think Jason Statham and Jet Li just need new agents. Li was great in "Hero", and based on the seconds long scene he had with Tom Cruise in "Collateral", Statham is just the kind of bad-ass that should star in a Michael Mann film (something like "Thief", perhaps?) I'd never mistake Randy Couture for Brando, but he's not terrible (except for "Scorpion King 2"). I saw him on "The Unit" (as a good soldier the Unit inadvertently screws over) and he wasn't bad. He was also in David Mamet's "Redbelt", which is more that you can say for Don "The Dragon" Wilson.

I'm hesitant. I loved Rambo, but everything Jet Li does is cheesy, and Jason Statham is great hit or a bad miss (Crank>Death Race), and Randy Couture... I haven't seen him do anything prevalent yet, so I won't bash him, however he could be the cheese dip of this potential cheese casserole.

And yet there's Whitaker. His mere presence adds the probability that this could be worthwhile. Hm... guess I'll have to wait for a trailer to hop on the bandwagon or steer clear of it.
