First Look: Twilight’s Robert Pattinson as Dali in Little Ashes

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on November 29, 2008

You didn’t think that Robert Pattinson was going to live off of his Justin Timberlake-level fame from Twilight for the rest of his career, did you? Alright, well maybe he still might, but in his next film he is going to at least attempt to break away from tween vampire brooding and play a much different character, surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. In Little Ashes, directed by Paul Morrison, Pattinson plays Dali as a young man, chronicling his time spent in the company of filmmaker Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty) and writer Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran).

Check out the first clip released from the film below, courtesy of Anne Thompson at Variety.

Official Synopsis: In 1922, Madrid is wavering on the edge of change as traditional values are challenged by the dangerous new influences of Jazz, Freud and the avant-garde. Salvador Dali arrives at the university; 18 years old and determined to become a great artist. His bizarre blend of shyness and rampant exhibitionism attracts the attention of two of the university’s social elite – Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunel. Salvador is absorbed into their decadent group and for a time Salvador, Luis and Federico become a formidable trio, the most ultra-modern group in Madrid. However as time passes, Salvador feels and increasingly strong pull towards the charismatic Federico – who is himself oblivious of the attentions he is getting from his beautiful writer friends, Margarita. Finaly, in the face of his friends’ preoccupations – and Federico’s growing renown as a poet – Luis sets off for Paris in search of his own artistic success. Federico and Salvador spend the holiday in the sea-side town of Cadaques. Both the idyllic surroundings and the warmth of the Dali family sweep Federico off his feet. Salvador and he draw closer, sharing their deepest beliefs, inspirations and secrets, convinced that they have found a kind of friendship undreamt of by others. It is more that a meeting of the minds; it is a fusion of souls. And then one night, in the phosphorescent water, it becomes something else…

Little Ashes is scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2009.

  • I'm guessing they were going for the ever-elusive child-toucher look.
  • Jenny Talls
    Sweet mustache.
  • I'm not sure I see Pattison as Dali, but I do want to see the movie to see if he pulls it off.

no facial movement? did we watch the same clip? I havent seen twilight and cant recall GoF, but that clip has sparked my interest. Very understated but felt. I'm guessing you want to see an actor hamm it up completely in order for it to be seen as good?

I disagree with the comments here, and feel that Rob is a pretty good actor. I haven't watched Twilight, but I've watched him in How to Be, Harry Potter, and a television movie called The Haunted Airman, and he's done a good job in all the three.
  • Rob is the last person who'd say he is some top notch, amazing actor. He'll tell you straight up that he's learning his craft and that he works to lose himself in each role. This is an independent small film that wasn't even supposed to be released in the US, but thanks to the overwhelming fanbase of Twilight, this movie and his other movie How to Be will get more attention then they probably would have generated on their own. Rob thought that Twilight was going to be another small movie. Last thing he ever planned on doing was getting involved in some juggernaut like what Twilight has become. I appreciate the work that Rob puts into each role and clearly this movie is no different. Between Twilight, How to Be, and Little Ashes no one can say Rob is type cast. He's got three very different projects to showcase his talent in.

I really hate to say this but this clip is bad...Pattinson's acting does not convince me here at all. He is no Heath Ledger that is for sure. I think Twilight made Pattinson not vice versa. Pattinson still needs to prove himself...but I think he's got potential?
