Thus far, only a few late-year films have been talked about as much as “The Golden Compass”, starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and a host of others. It tells the story of a little girl (Dakota Blue Richards) who gets swept up in an amazing journey that begins as your typical children’s adventure and evolves into a dark, philosophical epic. It is based on the popular “His Dark Materials” book series written by Phillip Pullman. The film itself, directed by Chris Weitz, looks to have a truly grand scale to it… Nothing like another epic adventure movie.

Check out the first trailer below:

And of course, nothing says “epic” like a Lord of the Rings reference to begin the trailer. I mean, come on… That is a bit lame. But whether or not I agree with marketing one epic adventure film by tying it in with another, the rest of the trailer looks pretty cool. I for one, am not very familiar with the “His Dark Materials” series, but I may begin freshening up. I do have time, as the film isn’t scheduled for release until December 7. For now though, my interest has been piqued…

You can also check out the trailer in HD over at Yahoo! Movies.

    Please explain this to me:

"There will be a new Children's movie out in December called The Golden Compass. It is written by Phillip Pullman, a proud athiest who belongs to secular humanist societies. He hates C.S. Lewis' Chronical's of Narnia and has written a trilogy to show the other side. The movie has been dumbed down to fool kids and their parents in the hope that they will buy his trilogy where in the end the children kill God and everyone can do as they please."

I know the Devil is a liar, but I want to hear what you have to say. I am considering doing what I can to pass the word around NOT to see this, and NOT to buy the book, UNLESS, You can explain.

    Thank you.

  • Glenda -- To be honest, I've never read the book. And I would venture to say that whomever wrote that quote may not have read it either. I wouldn't recommend just going around bashing it with a blind eye. For me, I will take 'The Golden Compass' for what it is, entertainment. When we report on the film closer to its release, our reviewer will most likely not tell you anything about the religious significance or tone of the film -- we will attempt to convey whether or not the movie is entertaining.

My recommendation to you, before stones are cast, is to pick up Phillip Pullman's book and form your own opinion. Who cares if he was an atheist? Just because you don't believe in the existence of God doesn't mean you can't have a great imagination. Sometimes I think we allow religion (or pre-conceived notions about someone else's religion) to get in our way of enjoying simple things such as entertainment...

    Just a thought.
