The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The folks over at Quick Stop Entertainment have gotten their hands on a teaser trailer of sorts for Terry Gilliam’s upcoming film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. As you will remember, this is the film that the late Heath Ledger was working on prior to his death earlier this year. Ledger has been replaced by a trio of actors, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law. As well, Tom Waits, Verne Troyer, Chistopher Plummer and Lily Cole will also star.

The trailer you will see below is more of a behind the scenes featurette guided by Gilliam, but there is some footage from the film mixed in. Have a look for yourself below. For more details, be sure to visit doctorparnassus.com.

What do you think of this first look at The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus?

I Like that Depp and Law are going to be taking parts of his role, but Colin Farrel?...
  • Hm. Didn't really like that very much. Was pretty boring, didn't give too much insight or tease that much. It was the visual equivalent of reading a blurb in Variety or something. Can't wait for a real trailer.
  • While I'd rather a real trailer, the concept shots really caught my attention. If they pull this off, I'll be very impressed. It's got a real fantastical feel to it, and the fact it had lots of pretty guys in it doesn't even feature as a reason for wanting to see it. Which is a surprise. Though I would rather not have watched what feels like a DVD featurette under the label "trailer", I'm glad I watched it as it got me far more interested in a movie that looks like it's going to play with our minds a little.

David: Colin Farrell can actually act! I know it's a surprise to some, but he can be quite good. Besides, if they're going for different aspects of his personality, they picked well. Jude Law tends towards the smooth suave almost oily aspect, Colin Farrell is the rough and tumble (I wonder if they'll let him use his real accent, it was excellent to hear it in In Bruges) and Christian Bale? Well, he's too pretty for me to think of pigeon holing him into a specific character set. Superhero is too specific... Brooding, maybe?

So, this is lame, but I can say with confidence that that shot of the fireworks around 2:06 is
from The Fellowship of the Ring. Obviously, I could be wrong, and I sort of hope I am, but it
makes me wonder how much of this footage is really directly related to to Doctor Parnassus
if they're borrowing footage from other films that aren't even Gilliam's work. I hope they're
not just teasing me along, because this looks fun nonetheless.

You won't see ANY footage from the actual movie here.

Aside from the concept art, publicity stills, tourist video footage of london and work-in-progress 3D shots, it's mostly footage from Brazil and all of Gilliam's previous films... a nice teaser but no trailer material here whatsoever.

Farrell's gonna HAVE to be convincing cause i acan ALWAYS hear his accent in every movie hes done.He was especially terrible in Alexander...(shudders) As for Bale hes done a few independent films i like.I even was into the Machinist.
