Fan Job: The Mad Hatter Looks Like Your Great Grandma

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on November 17, 2008

I know that I am generally regarded as a skeptical type — though I like to consider myself a cautious optimist — I think we can all agree that the photo to the right is not Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. If it is, then well, I will dress up in women’s clothing and reenact the image myself.

But while it is clear, at least to me, that the picture we see here is not a real part of the production, it is pretty entertaining. It never occured to me that a fan photoshop of Johnny Depp could look so much like my great, great grandmother. Then again, now that I think about it a little bit — my great, great grandmother was probably more attractive than that. I just never looked at her that way. That’s not to say that I look at photoshopped pictures of Johnny Depp that way either… Ah, screw it. You know what I mean.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland — which has very little to do with this images — is currently in production. It is scheduled to hit theaters on March 5, 2010.

What do you think of the image, either way?

  • I just saw the pic on comingsoon.net and thought it looked real enough... but now that you've just said it looks fake, you've made me doubt. Well, it DOES look fake, and it DOES look pretty awful, so I'm hoping you're right and the pic is nothing more than a fan-made photoshop work.

I bet the film's gonna be pretty amazing, though.

Geez, thank God it isnt Depp. I was starting to think Burton lost his creativity. Thats is an awful costume. Looks like my dead aunt Ruth. She had bad taste too.

Name one picture Tim Burton has made in the last 10 years that has been good and not mediocre or perfectly awful??

I gave up on him after sleepy hollow, his last good movie.
  • Agreed. Picture = fake. Film = likely to be awesome.

Personally, this is just me hoping that The Mad Hatter looks cooler than that. I have more faith in Tim Burton than to just take this as the final product.
  • BORING, BORING, BORING!!!!!

It'd be fun to see Depp take on a role that wasn't a woman. Captain Jack is his manliest work yet, and even then he was wearing a ridiculous amount of makeup. Or at least break his affection with Tim Burton already, I'm sick of his gaudy forced darkness flicks.
