While no one can top Don Knotts, Jon Cryer of 2 & 1/2 Men would be a respectful and excellent choice to honor Don Knotts. Both in his acting technique and talent and in that he's not an over publicized character actor like Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Johnny Depp etc. LIKE Don Knotts he's made a great supporting character in a great memorable sitcom. (Don Knotts-Barney on the Andy Griffith show is unforgettable as is Alan on Two and a Half Men.) The two are cut from the same cloth so to speak.

Another perfect choice and actor cut from the same cloth that would make the remake a laugh outloud till you cry movie would be Dave Chapelle, whom I think Don knotts himself would applaud and laugh till he crys were he alive to see this remake.

Not sure what I think about this one - it would be fun perhaps, but seriously, what kind of storyline would it have? And really, I'm tired of seeing character actors like Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell doing this stuff (or God forbid, Eddie Murphey), but I love the idea of John Malkovich or Ben Kingsley. I would like to see somone make it fun, but not stupid. (Not that the original was exactly smart but... I think my point is obvious.)

I think they flirted with the idea of remaking it with Carrey a few years (i.e., probably a decade) ago. I could've sworn they even made a promo poster

Oh God!!! I LOVE The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Not sure how I feel about a remake but what-the-hey. I think Ben Kingsley or John Malkovich could pull it off.
