earlyedition-header

I feel as if there should be some “bow chicka wa wa” entry music for me every day here on the Early Edition. I know that this column is in print, but I feel as if there needs to be that little detail in order to get you really psyched for all of the news that I’m about to drop into your world. Wouldn’t you agree? I didn’t think so. Anyway, time to move on with the first round of today’s news…

Spider-Man 4 in 3D! You’d pay more for that, right?

In an interview this week with Forbes this week, Sony topguy Michael Lynton spoke about the prospects of doing Spider-Man 4 in 3D. One of her main reasons: “People are paying a premium to see movies in 3-D and that’s a very big deal. It’s never been done before that someone says you have to pay more to see Spider-Man than a romantic comedy.” As Devin at CHUD points out, this is a slippery slope. Should theaters charge more to see a movie in 3D? I’m not sure.

Elizabeth Banks is Forever 21

Variety is reporting that Elizabeth Banks (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, The Uninvited) has signed on to star in a movie called Forever 21 for Dreamworks. The film will apparently have nothing to do with the popular clothing chain and instead will be a very “high-concept storyline.” They had me interested when they said “high-concept,” but I’m still weary of the title. Are they sure it doesn’t have anything to do with the sales of low-rise jeans?

Chatting with Ebert

Time has a very interesting interview with Roger Ebert in honor of the beginning of this week’s Overlooked Film Festival, currently in its 11th year. The fest is taking place this weekend in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and will feature a dozen titles that include Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg and a very rare 70mm print of the film Baraka. You may want to check it out if you’re in the area.

Mel Gibson’s staring at the Edge of Darkness, obviously

gibson-darkness

Empire has the first image of Mel Gibson in his return to acting in the upcoming film Edge of Darkness, which is being directed by Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell. In the film Gibson plays a homicide cop who witnesses the death of his daughter and sets out to catch the killers. There is no indication as of yet that this movie will be half as exciting as Liam Neeson in Taken, but we’re holding out hope.

Guillermo Del Toro Trashes Twilight

Vulture has pointed out this morning that in the promotion of his new vampire novel series, co-written with Chuck Hogan, director and creature man of legend Guillermo Del Toro has drawn some interesting comparisons with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. The new series The Strain: Book One (part of a trilogy) will allegedly have nothing to do with “romantic, languid young men sucking the necks of beautiful people.” He goes on: “I tried also to make the vampires as menacing and as real and as absolutely disgusting and as alien as possible,” he promises.”I tried to make them into a plague of creatures where you did not recognize their humanity — but our own inhumanity in them.” Sounds awesome if you ask me.

Look out for Fast Forward

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the folks at ABC will be running mysterious promos for a new show called Fast Forward (from producers David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga) next week during Lost. The premise of the show is that the everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds and has a mysterious vision of the future. Sounds interesting. This might actually have me watching commercials during Lost next week.

Nightmare on Elm Street remake gets its own Nancy Thompson

The fine gents over at Bloody-Disgusting have learned today that Rooney Mara, who stars in two of this year’s Sundance gems Dare and The Winning Season, is in final negotiations to play Nancy Thompson, who will undoubtedly be haunted by Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley). Funny story: Rooney is the younger sister of Kate Mara, who just signed on to Iron Man 2 today. Looks like its a good day to be a Mara sister.

Megan Fox in leather

For those of you who are still hanging with me in this rather long Early Edition, here’s some payoff for you. Another shot of Megan Fox in leather from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which comes out of the latest issue of Maxim Magazine. Thanks to FSR reader Christopher M. for the tip.

  • Devin from Chud also called 3D a gimmick, which I think is idiotic. 3D is awesome.
  • well if it hinders the quality of story because they can't get the 3D camera rigged properly and they can't shoot scenes the way the director wants it could be a disaster...I think after Spider-Man 3 the last thing you want to give the writers, producers, actors and director is a large distraction like making it 3D...if there is a process of turning the already shot footage into 3D go for it...but don't make it the biggest aspect about the movie...focus on "story" and writing I'm not going to a Universal Studios ride I'm going to see a movie... I think that's why people are calling it a gimmick, with examples like My Bloody Valentine and Monsters Vs. Aliens....they feel like theme park attractions rather than films..Avatar may end up changing a lot people's minds including my own but I want a movie not things popping off the screen...I don't want to be distracted from the film itself...
  • I thought My Bloody Valentine 3D used the 3D well and wasn't that gimmicky. Sure you have an eyeball or two punched out towards the camera, but if you didn't have that, you'd feel cheated. 3D makes excellent use of depth of image and creates an exciting experience. MBV3D also made great strides in 3D technology. The camera rigs are getting lighter and easier to use. Within a few short years I'm sure you'll have 3D capable imaging systems that are no bigger than todays regular HDCams.
  • I have no problem with MBV 3D because it knows what it is...it's not already an established franchise like Spider-Man is...I just don't see the upside to spending the extra money on an already bloated budget...I'd rather they spend the money the on the CGI special effects...I can understand where 3D is used with horror and Pixar films...I just think it's a bit of a throw away with large scale action films that are already entertaining on their own without the 3D effects...like I said if Avatar does the method justice I'll be on board..at the moment 3D isn't strong enough to get people in seats or I should say older teens/adults...
  • Richard C
OK so are we pose to comment on all them or just pick one ........HMMM well i want to comment on mel gibson. if he is going to return to acting he should have done one last Leathal Weapon movie just to see if he still has it in him to make a good Flick. To me he's to old and has'nt starred in his own movie like in along time so i think that movie will bomb SORRY MEL.
  • I really enjoyed Taken, but I expect Edge of Darkness to be better. Gibson gets a lot of shit (see above) even though he's a great actor, and this could be like an R-rated Ransom. I'm in.
  • You should check out (somehow) Brian Helgeland's director's cut of Payback. Gibson is dark, violent, sardonic - and the whole film is far better than what was released in theaters. It was ten years ago, but Gibson can definitely pull off something that severe.
  • I have and I agree. (Although I think both versions are very good and very different.)
  • The director's cut was released on DVD about a year ago, so its not hard to find. I actually saw it in theaters (Arclight) with Helgeland and a few others doing a discussion. I cant remember the original cut so I don't remember which I liked better.

That said, Mel Gibson is, was, and always will be awesome. Just that picture above looks good. If Mel was blonde and had a pair of sugartits, no one would care what he did or said, he'd just be another celebrity. As is, everyone gets drunk and clearly he was having marital difficulties, cut the guy a break.

The powerful outcasts of Hollywood (Cruise, Travolta, Gibson) should do a huge $180million version of The Expendables.
  • The original British mini-series from the 80's was amazing and dark.....I think it's going to be odd seeing it condensed into one film.. I have total faith in Campbell and Monahan...let's just hope Mel Gibson isn't too rusty from his break from acting...I agree Gibson was great in Payback...although, there isn't going to be any humor in this movie if it's anything like the mini-series....dark, violent and serious Gibson is a rare thing to see on screen...I'm hoping for more of a performance like we saw in Braveheart...it's more of a Departed/Mystic River kind of movie...I really wouldn't compare it to Taken
