DVD’s I Bought This Week - February 19, 2008

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

DVD’s I Bought - Week of February 19th

American Gangster: 3-Disc Collector’s Edition
One of the year’s five best films, American Gangster is a flat-out must own on DVD. I would have to be an idiot to not pick this one up. The only thing about this film that could be considered disappointing is its lack of presence at this years Academy Awards.
Michael Clayton
Call me weird, but I have this thing where I have to buy every film that is nominated for Best Picture. George Clooney heads up the film, and its Oscar nomination made Michael Clayton a must buy for me.

DVD’s I Rented - Week of February 19th

Lust, Caution
Ang Lee followed up his critically acclaimed Brokeback Mountain with Lust, Caution. Lee chose to keep the film at the dreaded NC-17 rating that it received from the MPAA. This, of course, limited the accessibility of the film and possibly its critical acclaim.
Rendition
Besides this films amazing cast, I had little to no interest in Rendition. However, I will see anything with Donnie Darko in it.
Redacted
An interesting looking film from a well received director, Redacted is definitely worth a look but not a purchase.

DVD’s I Avoided Like The Plague - Week of February 19th

In The Vally of Elah
Oh my god, I really disliked this movie. I did make a bold and accurate prediction though. “Tommy Lee Jones gives us his best performance ever. Even better than his Oscar winning performance in The Fugitive.” He deserved at least a nomination.
Chaos
Wesley Snipes, Ryan Phillippe and Jason Statham in Chaos, your next inexplicable straight to DVD vomit starring normally high budget actors. WTF?
