DVD’s I Bought This Week - February 12, 2008

Posted by Brian C. Gibson (brian@filmschoolrejects.com) on February 12, 2008

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

DVD’s I Bought - Week of February 12th

Gone Baby Gone
While I was not sold on the directing prowess of Ben Affleck, Gone Baby Gone came as a big surprise. Definitely deserving to be on the top of some year best lists, I gladly throw this one into my growing collection.
We Own The Night
A film that positioned itself near the end of the year, and was lost in the shuffle of Oscar bait. We Own The Night was a fun thriller, that brought some gorgeous audio to the table.
Stanley Kramer Film Collection
With a set containing films such as Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, Ship of Fools, The Member of the Wedding, The Wild One and The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T, how could you possibly go wrong? This set contains some classics by a true Hollywood legend.
Africa Unite
This gem comes from our friends over at Palm Pictures, and instantly became one of my favorite concert DVD’s in my collection. Africa Unite can not be simply categorized as a concert DVD as it is also a tribute and documentary to one of the most influential men of the century, Bob Marley.

DVD’s I Rented - Week of February 12th

The Amateurs
This film boasts a cast that is hard to ignore, and makes The Amateurs worth a look but not worth going that extra mile.
Introducing The Dwights
Having already seen this one in theaters, and hanging out with the very hot Emma Booth, I wanted to give Introducing The Dwights (and Emma) a second look.
Martian Child
Can John Cusack star in a bad movie? I’m sure it’s possible, but not likely. Has he starred in anything really good lately though? Martian Child gets a rent from me.l
Romance & Cigarettes
Nothing short of a dream cast makes Romance and Cigarettes worth checking out. It looks good, but was delayed for almost two years…Hit or miss, I’m guessing.
Becoming Jane
I’m slowly developing a man-crush on James McAvoy, seriously the guy always delivers in a big way. Besides, staring at Anne Hathaway is my favorite pastime.

DVD’s I Avoided Like The Plague - Week of February 12th

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?
Not my cup of tea. I Watched one Tyler Perry presentation and didn’t find it funny at all. To each his own
No Reservations
Maybe Aaron Eckhart should take some lessons from his Dark Knight co-star Christian Bale, who once said something to the effect that he’d rather be homeless than star in a romantic comedy.
