Dubious: Danny Boyle Approached to Helm Next Bond

Danny Boyle for Bond?

You may wonder why any story we grab from UK’s The Sun is automatically taken with a shovel of salt over the right shoulder, but I’ve got a fairly reasonable explanation. The most obvious reason is that they are known rumor-mongers. The second most obvious reason is that whenever I go to their website to get details on a story I’m supposed to write, I always get distracted by another blurb on their site. This time, while trying to read the work of a writer who should find stardom in Simple Wiki, I saw a story about Michelle Williams going topless for her next film and thought, “Now there’s some distracting news.” Well played, The Sun.

Luckily, I soldiered through and read the Bond news which is, not exactly news. It’s basically the information that Danny Boyle has been asked to direct the next installment in the James Bond universe, a list of connections he has to the production, and editorializing disguised as objective reporting about why the project is perfect for Boyle.

What the story seems to overlook is that they could basically write the same story about almost any current semi-action property that Hollywood, Pinewood, Bollywood, and the Ugandan Film Concern has lined up in the queue. Boyle is a major commodity for the moment, and he’s getting offers from everyone.

Speaking of which. This just in: Danny Boyle should totally direct the script project I’m working on. It’s about a tragically poor Indian boy who’s infected by a blood virus that he can only cure by traveling to the surface of the sun. Expect The Sun to report that soon.

What do you think? Could Boyle make a bad ass Bond?

  • no no NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! Danny Boyle, please stick to making beautiful original movies. I don't want your reputation to be tainted by the boring Bond franchise!
  • If he gets this and does a good job with the movie, at least better than the last one, he will def be considered the new IT man in Hollywood. Hope he can pull it off.
  • I think he was always considered the "it" man in Britain since the Shallow Grave/Trainspotting era in the 90's...but has been concentrating on films with incredible stories rather than ones with Hollywood gimmicks and bloated budgets.....if he does Bond don't expect it costing 200 million
  • Ah the Sun... classing up Britain since 1964 (thank you Wikipedia).
  • Meh. His style of action is already too much Bourne for me and that is the last thing Bond needs more of - quick cuts and shaky cam. I'm not interested in Boyle directing Bond.
  • Fully agreed w/ all of the commenters in here.
  • If this happens I think that he would have his own writers work on the script....the last film was ok compared to the Pierce films but the writing was awful...of course it was rushed and had to be a direct sequel...although they could have spent a bit more time developing characters....Boyle is great at making each character no matter how small shine on screen...I can't imagine what he could do with an actual Hollywood style budget .....he could make two or three solid Bond movies with the money they spent on Quantum....

to be honest I'm really excited about his South African film...I hope he makes that first
  • I agree, the shaky cam, and the quick cuts, would make it more like a Bourne film, (although isn't that the feel of Quantum), which some of the pacing of Slumdoggy felt like (but it worked).
Boyle might be able to pull it off, if he makes it more of a chick-flick, ([which he told Peter Bart he would like to do http://www.variety.com/blog/130000613/post/470040... ). My GF really liked Casino Royale, so maybe driving the bond character more towards that demo would work for BO, but not for action junkies.
