Discuss: What Did You Think of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra?

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on August 10, 2009

The time has come — and in the case of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, seeing it for yourself is half the battle. We all know about the critical outrage over the lack of press screenings and the select press (myself included) who were asked by Paramount Pictures to see the film early, many of whom walked away from their screenings with a positive reaction. Also, we can all look back into the archives and remember the bad buzz — director Stephen Sommers in trouble, fights in the edit-bay, etc. Of course, none of that matters now, especially if the masses head out to see this movie and like it.

Before we get to the part where you give us your review, here are a few helpful links:

    Better than Transformers 2 :D

I enjoyed it alot. And yes, it is better than Transformers 2.

Is the lack of comments on this article indicative of fanboys' indifference to GIJoe?
  • The lack of comments is because the movie has only been in theaters for 15 hours.
  • KevinCarr
Yeah, I get you Fure, but when other big movies (like TF2 and HP6) had their midnight shows, there were dozens of comments on a page like this. Plus, by this time of day (6:30 p.m. ET), they had midnight numbers out and I haven't seen any. Even though I enjoyed the movie, I might just be hoping it will flop to prove that the idea of not screening for press can potentially hurt it... yeah, that's pretty much where I'm coming from. I'm an asshole that way.
  • I don't think there are fanboys for GI Joe. They're fanmen. I think the average person who remembers GI Joe and really likes it is like 26-30.

But yeah, you're kind of a douche for wanting the movie to fail because the studio didn't show it. I wish they showed it, but only because seeing it between Mon-Thurs lets me write a review, even if its embargoed, and run it Friday, rather than having to rush out, carve some time on the weekend, and review it all in a small time frame.
  • for the first time, i'm using the 'so fun i didn't care about it's flaws' defense. i don't think anyone disagrees there are problems aplenty - things the Joes were doing didn't make tactical sense, 'updated' look for characters was lacking coolness, CGI was pretty poor overall, characters were tidily connected by mutual pasts, etc. in spite of all this, i was totally into the over the top action pieces and i actually felt the characters were done justice. this is destined to be one of those movies you wind up sticking with on a Saturday afternoon when you're flipping thru cable.

*edit* to add i better see BBQ, Quick Kick & Tomax/Xamot in the sequel. a sequel about Serpentor, naturally.

that exactly what the cartoon is, youve just described what the cartoon but yet most of you ignore it.

You guys are both right. I had fun watching the movie, and it reminded me of a live-action Saturday morning cartoon. All that was missing on the guilty pleasure meter was a big bowl of Lucky Charms... and being able to see it in my underwear.
  • I haven't seen it yet, but it's better than Transformers 2.
