Discuss: Can Penn, Del Toro and Carrey Pull Off The Three Stooges?

stooges-casting

Earlier today Variety confirmed that MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their final cast for their upcoming comedy The Three Stooges. As the report states, the filmmakers have settled on Sean Penn to play Larry Fine, Jim Carrey to play Jerome “Curly” Howard and Benicio Del Toro to play Moe Howard. Jim Carrey is currently planning on gaining some 40 pounds in order to get into the physical dimensions of Jerome “Curly” Howard, which I find very interesting.

The film is not described as a biopic, but more of a comedy built around the antics of the trio throughout their long careers. Production is set to begin in early fall for a release in 2010. As Variety’s Michael Fleming points out, the most interesting piece of this casting is obviously Jim Carrey as Curly, but I find the involvement of both Penn and Del Toro to be equally as interesting. Especially considering the directorial history of the Farrelly brothers — it leads me to believe that this isn’t going to be just a silly, over the top look at the legendary comedic trio. It just might be a very serious film with some serious talent to back it up. Then again, who knows. I’m yet to see or hear about a script, so the tone of this film is still a mystery. What we do know is that if this casting holds and it makes it into production, we are in for a very interesting film.

What do you think of Penn, Carrey and Del Toro as The Three Stooges?

  • I think if they have to make the movie that this is a really cool cast, but I don't think that this is a movie that should get made. Just leave legendary things alone.

Very interesting casting by the Farrelly bros. My favorite being Jim Carrey, I can't wait to see him put on the weight for this film. hope to hear more about the film soon.
  • No Shemp?

When i first heard about Penn being in this film, i was thinking about Penn Gilette....then again, why would a magician be interesting in comedy, you ask?? Well, i don't know either, but i know that the Aristocrats was pretty funny.

This should be an interesting movie, i'd like to see where they take it.
  • This is the worst news possible. For one, a feature length Stooges movie is absurd. Secondly, the casting looks more like three actors having a wacky vacation from their real jobs instead of real casting.

Call me when they claim they want to make a new version of Duck Soup with Sir Ben Kingsley in Groucho's role so I can bitch again.
  • It just seems like ego trip. Like there going to add depth to the three stooges or something. The stooges don't need depth, or some rehash of the stooge's material. If I want to see the three stooges, I would buy the dvd from the 3 dollar bin at walmart, not 9 dollars for movie ticket from two actors that have communist ties and one that has to keep proving he is a great actor. And Farrelly Bros., if you want to do drama then do drama, don't half ass it and give the people a heart felt comedy.

I'm still not sold on this half baked idea of trying to do a Stooges movie, even more so that there is no way the original Stooges aren't in it. Honestly Jim carry as Curly, I just don't see it. This movie will stink on ice, not because the subject matter isn't up to par, although many think otherwise (poor saps), but because you can't get the chemistry that the original guys had. You will ultimately be left with what was commonly seen around the home of my youth, someone desperately trying to do stooges impressions, and them falling far short of glory. I was that kid and still hold a very special place in my heart for the Stooges, and to those who just rolled their eyes all I can say is you just don't get it, and most likely never will.

I have to agree with Cole, what's next Animal Crackers with Jim Carrey singing the Captain Spalding song? Sean Penn asking Why a duck? How about Shia LaBouth playing Pedro in the remake of Up In Smoke? They need to actually put some efford into finding those new comedy teams instead of trying to rehash the old ones with sub-par imitations.

You know you have hit bottom when you find yourself remaking Race to Witch Mountain, oh wait that's just been done.
  • Wow, needless to say that this is very interesting.
  • I am with Cole on this one. None but Jim Carry has a back ground in comedy and they need it to be able to do the stooges. Hollywood needs to leave this alone as their lives were not all fun and games and anything but a great movie is what the original three desereve.
