Direct-to-Awesome: Prepare Yourself for Yeti!

yeti-posterIn general, straight-to-DVD or direct-to-DVD isn’t a good thing. In fact if a sequel goes straight to the home-friendly viewing format, it is usually regarded as a really, really bad thing. But as many of us who troll our local video stores each week have come to find, every so often there is a movie that skips a theatrical run that might just be worth your time. We find this phenomena most often in the horror genre, as low-budget horror flicks do seem to sell well.

Additionally, at least in the case of the direct-to-DVD film Yeti which is pictured to the right, there are some films that will interest us no matter where they come from or how we get to see them. And ever since I saw the one shining scene in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor that includes a Yeti football game, I’ve been yearning for a good Yeti movie. I have not seen a solid Yeti flick since 1974’s Shriek of the Mutilated or 1957’s The Abominable Snowman. And yes, I am a Yeti movie connoisseur.

As the MTV Movies Blog points out, Yeti will be headlined by Young People Fucking’s Carly Pope and former SeaQuest star and Stargate: Atlantis director Peter DeLuise. It will follow a group of college football players as they try to escape the wilderness where they’ve become the prey of a “hungry beast with an insatiable bloodlust.” Awesome, indeed. Wouldn’t you agree?

Yeti is scheduled for release on DVD on January 13, 2009.

  • This article prompts me to make a confession: I love the Sci-fi channel orginal horror movies! I most recently watched Stan Lee's Harpies with Stephen Baldwin ... low budget brilliance. There is something about having such incredible low expectations for a movie, and then truly enjoying the cheesy/campy dialogue and 1993 CGI ... it is zen.
