Frankenstein May Be Del Toro’s Next Monster

Oscar-nominated writer/director Guillermo Del Toro sat down with MTV for an interview and discussed his blossoming future as a blockbuster director. The Pan’s Labyrinth director, who has Hellboy II: The Golden Army comes out this summer, was asked what he’d like to do next when the WGA strike ends. His answer: FRANKENSTEIN!

The visionary director wants to take on Mary Shelley’s story and has a “definitive take” on the crazed doctor and his monster. The story has been adapted several times over the years—from Mel Brooks to Kenneth Branagh helming to stars like Robert De Niro and Boris Karloff playing the creature—everyone has brought a little more of the story to life. When Del Toro was asked who would play the creature he joked “I will appear shirtless for most of the length of the film,” and mused “You will be amazed at my chocolate bar physique.”

So although it’s still quite early in the process, and even though he can’t begin really working until the strike lifts, a Del Toro-directed Frankenstein is enough to get movie fans excited. The director also expressed interest in two other franchise movies that he could direct. His name comes up alongside Sam Raimi for The Hobbit which Peter Jackson is producing, and he also would like to join good friend Alfonso Cuaron as a director for an installment of the Harry Potter franchise.

I think bringing Del Toro on to do the final Potter film, Deathly Hollows, would be an excellent idea. It’s the only story that would be almost entirely removed from Hogwarts Castle and Del Toro would get to play with the formula more than any of the other directors. As for Frankenstein, Del Toro proved with PL that he is a magician when it comes to mixing reality and fantasy. We could have a beautifully realized fantasy movie which could be terrifying, just like his 2006 masterpiece.

So, until we know for sure what he has planned next, we can at least take solace in the fact that Hellboy II hits theaters July 11th. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, it looks pretty promising:

Del Toro has NOT let me down as a director.
Ever since I saw BLADE 2, which was kinda CGI heavy but still, you could see the style that this guy has and why not….he’s Latino baby!

PAN’S LABYRINTH, which was remarkable by the way, was a great movie. OH!
I took this girl out on a date, our first one, to a movie. I say let’s see PAN’S LABYRINTH it’s like a ALICE IN WONDERLAND type of thing but has some dark elements, I say it’s a spanish movie and we have to read subtitles, she looked at me and said “So? I can read.”

Back to Del Toro….this guy is great for this movie. He can bring so much and totally revamp this classic figure. I would LOVE to see this movie.

I think it’s great that alot of spanish directors are getting their names recognized into movies. THE ORPHANAGE is one that I must see, which I read ,it did better than PAN’s LAB, but PL was a sleeper, meaning nobody knew too much about it but once they seen it it was something great.

Del Toro doing THE HOBBIT, I’m not sure, something is telling me please don’t do it-let Raimi or Jackson do it.
As for the last Harry Potter movie? please god let it be Del Toro who directs.
