Dear John toppling over Avatar does not make sense at all. It's incomprehensible even though the numbers tell you otherwise. Point is, an experiment, storyline, and blockbuster so good as Avatar completely outperforms the likes of Dear John.

The idea that other films that made less (profit-wise) than Avatar such as Titanic, (and other great award-winning movies), to be easily toppled over during a strange weekend makes it so unacceptable and surreal. Dear John was a very simple, touching movie. But the others, which received so much critical acclaim, deserved better credit, if the basis of toppling over Avatar was sentimentality.

1.Dear John – $32,400,000
2.Avatar – $23,600,000

Seriously. Toppled?! I could understand of DJ made 70mil out the gate, but you guys are making it seem like it surpassed this thing with ludicrous speed. It only made 9-9 1/2 million less than DJ. It's still in second place with a respectable box office return! Let's see how VD does on the second week and wait for a real movie to come out.

Yeah, definitely bump smaller films like Crazy Heart, but bigger films generally aren't re-released. There are some cases of limited runs, but its rare. Avatar is still in 3,000 theaters, but thats because it hasn't stopped selling tickets. No bump necessary.

The unanswered question for me is this. Did any films still in theaters get a bump from the Oscar nominations? Have any of the flms that have left theaters (Like The Hurt Locker) been put back in theaters since the Oscar nominations? Or is the “oscar bump” not seen until after the show?
