Dark Knight Viral: Clown Travel Agency Sets a Date, Burns Harvey Dent Button

Clown Travel Agency - Dark Knight Viral Marketing

I will admit that it is pretty damn hard to keep up with all of this viral marketing for The Dark Knight. There have been bus tours, questions of seriousness and even some cakes with cell phones baked into cakes. As well, we have seen the focus shift from The Joker since the passing of Heath Ledger, to a strong focus on Harvey Dent, the soon to be District Attorney played by Aaron Eckhart. This weekend though, we saw a shift back to some marketing with The Joker at the heart of the shenanigans.

Clown Travel Agency

For starters, a new website has launched for a Clown Travel Agency. The image on clowntravelagency.com shows a beat up suitcase (pictured above) with an envelope that displays a departure date of 4-01, which is tomorrow. Many are speculating that this will be the launching pad for the second Dark Knight trailer, but no official word yet. To say the least, we will be keeping an eye on the site in the coming days.

The second update comes to us from our friends at Coming Soon, who received word that half-burnt buttons of Harvey Dent were being shipped to people on the Harvey Dent mailing list. The button was mailed out from the Concerned Citizens for a Better Gotham (CCFAMG.org). Check it out below:

I am interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on The Dark Knight’s viral campaign. Personally, I am glad that more attention is being paid to this film (despite the fact that it doesn’t necessarily need more attention — it is going to kill either way), but frankly this is all becoming a bit hard to follow. I don’t know, maybe its just me.

  • I'm waiting for something else to run around to during the work week. Although, I feel the Harvey Dent stuff has been somewhat lame compared to how cool the Joker campaigns were. I want to see another trailer of some sort before the movie comes out.

Just went to the site there is a note that says a there is a special bag of goodies that awaits you, then theres a list of cities under London, Endgland there are three addresses that instruct you to either ask for a package or ask for someone, seems pretty cool wish I lived in England.

So, apparently, all the address on the www.clowntravelagency.com relate to Bowling alleys all over the world? and the letter that is in the envelope alludes to bowling "strike"?????

Went to the first one on the list (Tavistock Hotel, London) just after lunch today - ended up being the second person there. Someone got there ten minutes before me and got whatever it was they were holding (and I don't know what that was... the girls behind the counter wouldn't tell me, besides the fact that it was gone and they only had one). Bugger.

I think the viral advertising is brillant and suprisingly creative; it an actual interactive experience that catches youre interest and sort of pulls you in.
Its a perfect way to draw attention to this sort of film; insted of just bombarding people with traditional advertisements they take a more artistic, playful approach to it. It kinda like a massive role playing game in which anyone can get involved at any time.
I dont think adults are afforded the oportunity to play pretend like this often enough =)
  • why it has only picture on the web. there are no link to anywhere
