Earlier this week, reports came in that Robert Downey Jr. would no longer be starring in the Jon Favreau directed Cowboys and Aliens. The adaptation of the Scott Mitchell Rosenberg comic was due to be shooting soon, with a summer 2011 release date planned. The questions were abound. The production was in danger.

Then, out of the night rode the very British Daniel Craig. In a report from the folks over at Collider, we learned yesterday that Craig was in talks to take the role of Zeke Jackson, the role vacated days earlier by Downey. It seems fitting, seeing as Downey recently crossed the pond to play Sherlock Holmes, a Brit. Why wouldn’t Daniel Craig come over here and play a cowboy? Logic, people!

He is in negotiations, which means that contracts have not yet been signed. But I think we can all agree that this would be a cool collaboration between the likes of Favreau and Craig. We’ve seen what Favs and Downey can do. As well, it is exciting to see them working from a script by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Lost producer Damon Lindelof.

The story takes place in Silver City, Arizona, in the time of cowboys. When the denizens of a Tombstone-era town stop shooting each other up at various corrals and are forced to deal with an alien invasion. Yee-haw!
