Cameron Crowe, whose last film was the less than impressive Elizabethtown, has an “untitled” project ready to go for Columbia Pictures. Variety reports that Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon have been tapped to star in the film, which will be Crowe’s 7th film as director. Columbia was the winner of the Crowe project, outbidding other studios for the rights to distribute the film. Crowe has not done a film with Columbia since 2000’s brilliant Almost Famous.

So, apparently you can bid on a movie without a plot description? Though I’m not surprised, because I’m sure having Cameron Crowe, Ben Stiller, and Reese Witherspoon’s name attached is enough to sell a project, it’s still not enough to stir real buzz. A plot was not revealed for the film, only the fact that the two stars will partake in a “romantic comedy adventure” – for all we know Cameron Crowe has written Fool’s Gold 2.

As for how important this is for the three big names: very. Crowe flopped with Elizabethtown after casting a woeful Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst as his leads and turned a lot of people off with Vanilla Sky (even though I love that movie). Reese Witherspoon had some reported on-set squabbling with Vince Vaughn during the filming of Four Christmases, another romantic comedy. Stiller has a lot riding on Tropic Thunder, which he co-wrote, produced, and directed (but even if that flops he has a sure-hit with Night at the Museum 2: Escape from the Smithsonian in production). So, even if Crowe’s name is not enough to sell a project, Stiller and Witherspoon are date-movie gold. There’s lots of potential for the studio to make money here.

But basically, what I REALLY want to see is a good Cameron Crowe movie again, not just an acceptable date movie. Crowe is our generation’s Billy Wilder, capable of achieving blistering comedy and subtle poignancy. He proved with Elizabethtown that he scraped the bottom of his auto-biographical barrel, though. Hopefully we’ll have a title and description to work with soon, but the thought of another Cameron Crowe movie at least proves that he’s made another stellar mixtape to adapt into a movie.

The untitled Cameron Crowe film is set to begin filming in January.
