Clerks 2 to Debut at Cannes (Snooch!)

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on February 11, 2006

Around here this is the most anticipated film of the year. Kevin Smith’s follow up to his 1994 debut Clerks, Clerks 2 will debut in August at the Cannes Film Festival, where it’s predecessor was the recipient of two major awards way back in the day.

The story, as Smith explains, was not an attempt to rehash or make monetary gain off of the popularity of the original (from News Askew):

“I never want to taint the original,” Smith says. “But that’s not a reason not to tell this story, just because you’re afraid of the potential reaction.”

The sequel, he promises, is not a “money grab” after the poor response to his Jersey Girl. He says it’s a chance to catch up with some characters who used to be like him, and further explore their non-lives.

Among those who are nervous about it were the two stars, Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson — two local Jersey guys plucked from obscurity by Clerks who are hoping not to fade back to obscurity this time. “You’re touching a film that is beloved by a rabid following. I was excited about the sequel, but at the same time I was like, ‘I hope we can do it right,’ ” O’Halloran says.

For my money, Kevin Smith can do no wrong in film. I was a staunch supporter of a very under-appreciated piece of work in Jersey Girl. The excitement that this movie is creating is beginning to become unbearable. But then again, if you are like me, teaser trailers should suffice to keep your emotions at bay.
