The movie is about Micky Ward's life. Dicky Eklund was a big part of Micky's success in the ring, so he'll be in the movie quite a bit. However, in 1993, Dicky was sent away to prison for 10 years while Micky was moving up the ranks. That's what crack and kidnapping, and armed robbery with a sawed off shot gun and car jacking will do to ya.

Yes I presumed it was always a big role but just from what I've read 'The Fighter' of the title is Ward making him the main character. But after seeing 'High On Crack Street' I was intrigued even more by Ecklund. But as you say it may have always been 50/50 or maybe it's still a Ward show all the way.

I would hope it's more focused on Bale rather than Whalberg. Marky Mark doesn't do it for me as an actor.

Remember that the two actors attached to the role of Dicky Ecklund before Bale were Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. I don't think the role of Ecklund was ever a small supporting role. It doesn't seem likely with both of them interested in the role prior.
