File this under strange. Adam Sandler has signed on to the Columbia Pictures production of Jack and Jill, a romantic comedy that is a retelling of sorts of the classic tale of two kids that went up the hill — or something.

But get this, Sandler will not only play Jack, but also his twin sister Jill. No other details are known about the project, nor are they needed. This sounds like another round of ‘gender mix-n-match’ gone wrong. It was bad enough that Sandler had to deliver the Zohan, last year, and I can’t imagine this working out much better. For my money, he should be sticking with character comedies such as Funny People or family films like Bedtime Stories. Those seem to work just fine. There’s no need to be silly anymore, Mr. Sandler.

The project is set to shoot early next year and will be released by Sony in early 2011, according to Variety.
