Sorry, I goofed up a little. While talking about the Titanic, I mentioned 'Armageddon' instead of what should have been 'Deep Impact'.

But nothing much changes for Titanic you know, it still is unfortunately the All time Top Grosser still - a perfect medicine - a feel-good movie made for people who were sufferring from depression. I watched it once in theatres just because it was James Cameron's child.

First of all, Let's see. What these movies are about and who they appeal to.

Titanic:

1. It's infact a love story-yes, a love story - however realistically or unrealistically it was made it's still a love story. Love stories appeal to everyone, almost everyone especially epic ones. So everyone buys a ticket. By 'everyone' I mean - nuclear families/ atomic families/ couples/ young pubescent adolescent hormones-on-overdrive crazy girls (Leo - you know)/ senior citizens who had never in their life before, watched anything that can be technically classified as a 'movie'.
... And there is one thing that Box-office Experts agree forever - there is nthing crazier than a hormones-on-overdrive girl gone crazy for Leonardo di caprio. And even Leo can't repeat the feat today.

2. There was no movie in that period to be released in the next almost five months from December who could be a potential blockbuster enough to challenge 'Titanic'. So 'Titanic' ran amock -unchecked, uncontrolled. Whoever wanted to see a decent movie in a theater had no choice but to buy 'Titanic' in those five months. Only after five long months passed was when 'Armageddon' was released.

3. As usual with their politically right but still controversial decisions, Oscar committee gave away 14(!!!) Oscars to Titanic as if their was no other movie competing it at all. i still believe 14 was way toooooo much for a single movie. no movie is that technically perfect, especially when the real action is only at the end of a movie when a huge ship sinks in an ocean. That boosted the ticket sales even more.

4. 'Titanic' was unique -- one-of-a-kind. No other movies to compare with. The previous 'Titanic' was released in the fifties, if I not wrong, when there was not much technical development.

5. It was in Theatres for a whole nine months, which is unheard of before/ after its era.

6. It was re-released and then re-released in the coming years all over the world a 176049349448 times and so it kept on encashing.

My rating -Titanic (overall): **** out of Five.

The Dark Knight:

1. It is, as the name suggests, a Dark movie. no major love story. No feel-good effect even though however intelligently / crisply it was made. Even the humour was dark. So no whole-sale families, no crazy girls as viewers. That in itself reduces the ticket sales drastically.

2. This a cut-throat competitive era where the box-office throne changes hands every week - forget about five months of non-release of blockblusters. Even then TDK stayed for 4 whole weeks on top consecutively, the first to do so in five long years. There just may be some chances of more, just may be.

3. The Oscars are yet to come. Then may be it will boost the sales of TDK somewhat.

4. TDK has a lot of competitors - Iron Man, Spiderman, Hulk, X-Men, Superman, hellBoy or whatever, Fantastic Four - hell, even himself in other Batman movies. So the fans are divided and thus get reduced in numbers in all these categories, thus adversely affecting ticket sales.

5. It's only now 6 weeks in the run till date and it probably has crossed over Spiderman to get to 18th position atleast (IMDB has yet to update its list which is does on weekly basis and on Mondays.)at the time me writing this. All this in just 6 weeks.

6. It is TDK's only first run in the theatres. I hope there is atleast one re-run after the Oscars (If it wins any).

Considering all this, No way in this era, can any movie overtake 'Titanic' atleast in the worldwide grosses, however I wish TDK does it. But one thing I liked about TDK is that it is the highest grossing movie in the DARK category and will definitely cross the crap -Spiderman 3 soon in worldwide grosses to become the highest grossing Superhero movie of all time, that is if we call Batman a Superhero.

My Rating - The Dark Knight (overall): **** 1/2 out of Five.

Its not going to break titanic's record but it'll give it a scare. But there's no way its going to even scare titanic as far as worldwide boxoffice goes. Titanic did 1.8 billion. 1.2 billion overseas alone. Nothing is going to touch that until movie tickets are 30 dollars a whack. And for the person who doesn't understand gone with the wind's popularity: you have to remember that gone with the wind was also a phenomenon as a novel before they ever made a movie of it, so it had a built in audience waiting. An audience that didn't have television, dvd players or the internet.

Not that i don't want it too, i'm just realistically looking at it. It's going to slow down eventually and the fact that Titanic had a way longer time frame makes a huge difference. I would loved to be proven wrong and i want Dark Knight to break the record. But it won't unless it maintains this pace for the next 3 weeks. Which isn't likely. Even though i agree if any movies going Titanic, its going to be the Dark Knight .
