brendanfraser-1

Anyone stricken with nightmares of Brendan Fraser blandly scampering through such midlevel family fare as last year’s Journey to the Center of the Earth remake and January’s Inkheart would do well to stop reading right now. That’s because Variety reports he’s signed on to another such project, the amusingly titled Furry Vengeance.

The film will star Fraser as a real estate developer who incites the wrath of forest creatures when he tries to replace their Oregon woodlands home with a new subdivision. Roger Kumble directs a screenplay by Mr. Woodcock scribes Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert. Shooting is scheduled to commence early this summer for Summit Entertainment and Participant Media, and Furry Vengeance is the first project the companies have announced since news broke of a multi-film distribution deal.

None of this inspires much optimism. The premise has some comic potential, but barring an unforeseen injection of intelligent satire into the screenplay one should expect little more than a live action takeoff on Over the Hedge, with lots of CGI and mild slapstick. Then there’s the fact that College Road Trip might well be the most notable film Kumble has directed in the decade since Cruel Intentions. Moviegoers will get to see for themselves sometime in 2010.

What do you think? Is there any hope for this project?
