Box Office: Bruno Wins the Weekend, Opens to $30 million
Box Office By John Cairns on July 12, 2009 | (12) Comments
As expected it was the weekend of Bruno at the box office, as a $14.4 million opening on Friday night powered the Sacha Baron Cohen flick to a first place finish at $30 million. That’s better than the $26 million opening for Borat.
What I find interesting is that even though Bruno had a big Friday night, it promptly fell back to third place on Saturday and Sunday, with Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs reclaiming top spot for those two days. Now, that I did not expect. But I really do get the impression that all the stories about how “hard-R” the movie is are having an impact. This is a movie designed to make audiences squeamish, that’s the style of humor we’ve come to expect. And it’s not for everyone, and the box office is reflecting it.
As for I Love You Beth Cooper, it went down the tubes at $5 million, but no one really expected a hit here, anyway.
The results:
- Bruno – $30,426,000
- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – $28,500,000
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – $24,200,000
- Public Enemies – $14,111,000
- The Proposal – $10,507,000
- The Hangover – $9,930,000
- I Love You Beth Cooper – $5,000,000
- Up – $4,656,000
- My Sister’s Keeper – $4,180,000
- The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 – $1,600,000
I really don’t have a lot to say this weekend; the box office results sort of speak for themselves. Suffice it to say this is the calm before the storm before the latest Harry Potter movie shows up. So I’ll be back with another early preview of that sure-to-be-blockbuster Wednesday release here at the Reject Report!
