Box Office: 21 More Super than Superhero Movie
Box Office By John Cairns on March 30, 2008 | Be the First To Comment
Well, it seems Americans may have some taste in movies after all. Superhero Movie, well, was not so super after all. The winning movie this weekend was the gambling pic 21, beating out Horton Hears a Who! and Superhero Movie. In fact it was a dismal showing for Superhero Movie. NOT EVEN $10 MILLION!!!
I am sure the Star Wars fanboys will claim credit for the bad Superhero showing, thanks to all the protesting and bellyaching those guys did over the Fanboys mess. Thinking about it some more, though, I believe these fanboys wasted their energy by picketing Superhero Movie. They would have made far better use of their time if they had skipped the picket line and had spent their money on 21. Then there would have been no doubt about that movie’s victory, and Superhero Movie would have been embarrassed. I guess these fanboys felt that picketing would give them the opportunity to wear their ridiculous Star Wars getups in public.
Anyway, I am sure the fanboys are enjoying what went down this weekend. Let that be a lesson to you folks at the Weinstein Company; don’t mess with the fanboys.
It was a terrible showing for the other new movies this weekend. Stop-Loss only did $4.5 million in business and Run Fat Boy Run did not show up on the radar screen at all. They only took in 2.3 mil, and I had predicted 10 mil for that flick. Boy, do I look silly.
In fact it was a lousy weekend all around at the box office. The only clear winner this weekend was 21. Meanwhile Horton is feeling the fatigue after three weeks at theaters, and the other movies aren’t get much in the way of business at all, especially these new releases. I’m pretty certain people are really tired and fed up with what the offerings are at this time of year. I notice even 21 is not getting great reviews from Rotten Tomatoes or anywhere else. So yes, people are generally bored out of their skulls at what they are seeing on the silver screen, and they are staying home and watching college hoops on TV. That’s my read on the situation.
The damages:
| 1. 21 | $23.7 million |
| 2. Horton Hears a Who | $17.5 million |
| 3. Superhero Movie | $9.5 million |
| 4. Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns | $7.7 million |
| 5. Drillbit Taylor | $5.8 million |
| 6. Shutter | $5.3 million |
| 7. 10,000 B.C. | $4.9 million |
| 8. College Road Trip | $3.5 million |
| 9. The Bank Job | $2.8 million |
| 10. The Bank Job | $3.4 million |
So there you have it! Another week of predictions up in smoke here at The Reject Report. What else is new. See you later this week as we try again to get our predictions right.
