Box Office: $24.8 Million for Nicolas Cage and Knowing
Box Office By John Cairns on March 22, 2009 | (4) Comments
Well, I wish I had some of that ability to look into the future that Nicolas Cage has, because then I would get a lot more of my predictions right. Knowing won the weekend with a haul of $24.8 million.
Meanwhile, based on this weekend’s box office for I Love You, Man, I think it’s safe to say the “bromantic” comedy is in the same sort of box-office state as the romantic comedy: comatose. Although, you know, $18 million isn’t bad, and it would have been an upset if this movie had won the weekend, anyway. But I thought that once the buzz got going from the Friday screenings, people might flock to this movie on Saturday and Sunday and give this flick the box office title.
Shows you what I know. Maybe moviegoers — guys, especially — think the whole notion of “bromance” and of straight males “going on a man date” is a silly idea to begin with. There is nothing wrong with being a “girlfriend guy” or wanting to be around girls. Maybe that’s why this movie remained stuck in second place this weekend.
Moviegoers weren’t listening to the reviewers, that’s for sure. I Love You, Man had a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 82 percent, and it still finished second. By contrast, Knowing had a rating of 25 percent, and the fools in middle America still found a way to put Nicolas Cage on top of the box office.
Why should I be surprised?? Oh, and Duplicity raked in $14 million, but I’m not the least bit surprised at that, either.
The damages:
- Knowing $24,814,000
- I Love You, Man $18,005,000
- Duplicity $14,402,000
- Race to Witch Mountain $13,004,000
- Watchmen $6,725,000
- The Last House on the Left (2009) $5,921,000
- Taken $4,100,000
- Slumdog Millionaire $2,700,000
- Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail $2,510,000
- Coraline $2,143,000
By the way, Watchmen took another big drop by 62.3 percent. Sixty two percent! Good grief, that’s terrible. This movie has been dropping like a rock ever since it opened.
That’s all for now. Next weekend we should see plenty of excitement over Monsters vs. Aliens. Fun stuff. See you then.
