Batman '89 was virtually improvised with constant rewrites, no-one knew what? they were doing from one scene to the next. It's amazing it makes any sense at all (and a lot of it doesn't); it's success was down to the draw of the Batman character, not its strength as a film. Tim Burton was so dissatisfied with what he did he jettisoned as much as he could for the sequel, a much more Burton-y film. TDK, on the other hand, is a Nolan film top to bottom. Far more consistent.

The '66 Batman movie is just like including "Airplane" in you list of favorite "Airport" movies. It's fun, but pure parody and satire.

The author of the article isn't smoking anything...

Carey's Riddler WAS spot on. Jones' Two-Face was decent...the lack of connection to the first film's Harvey Dent was disturbing. Nicholson's Joker was terrific. Even Catwoman and Mr. Freeze were portrayed with a bit of homage to the original characters.

My one casting problem with the bad guys was Danny Devito's Penguin. It should have been a much more "fun" character in the vein of Joker and Riddler. Not easy to watch at all...

The new films? The Scarecrow could have been done SO much better. Ra's Al Ghul wasn't fully explored, but the Joker is the kind of Joker this series should expect.

Two more observations:

In the srieals, on the radio, in the TV show, cartoons and every movie series, Superman's origin was explained. I'm glad Batman's origins were finally explored in the first "new" film.

And any review mentioning the '66 Batman film and not mentioning the classic "Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb" line missed something.

The only flaw that I have found with Christian Bale (that you forgot to mention) is the Batman lisp that seems to spew from his mouth as he ridicules villians. I thought it would have been wiped up in the Dark Knight, but sadly,.... no. He re-emerges with his S's throwing me off of every serious remark he tries to make. Good article Adam. You are a good writer... Mrs. Ranson would be proud
