What can’t Americans get enough of at the box office? You guessed it… comic books. Yet another comic book is slated to hit the silver screen—this time a sci-fi series aptly titled “Afterburn” from the independent comic book company Red5Comics that depicts a post-apocalyptic world in which part of the atmosphere has been destroyed and much of the population is dead. The series is set for cinematic adaptation by up-and-coming Hollywood screenwriter Matt Johnson (Torque, Into the Blue) and producer Toby Jaffe (Life or Something Like It, The Quick and the Dead).

The film was fast-tracked after the comic book rights were secured by Maguire Entertainment—you guessed it, the production company of one Tobey Maguire, the man behind our whiny, schizophrenic filmic rendition of the popular comic book superhero Spider-Man. Apparently, Maguire’s status as the man behind the bug isn’t enough to satiate his appetite for mutilating great comic book heroes. While little to no information is circulating about possible casting choices for the film (perhaps due in part to the fact that the Red5Comic series has only a cult following, if it can even be called that), we’re just crossing our fingers that the names of some of Maguire’s old co-stars (think Kirsten Dunst or Reece Witherspoon) won’t come up. Maguire’s resume is a mixed bag of good and bad… let’s hope that his foray into production will have fruitful results.

To find out more about “Afterburn” –which actually sounds like a pretty kick ass comic book—feel free to head over to the Red5Comics Official Site.
