In the world of nearly non-news today comes a brand new production photo of James Cameron on the set of his latest film, the sci-fi epic Avatar. In the image, which can be seen above courtesy of Empire, Cameron is seen holding a large gun that is attached to some sort of gunship.

The photo doesn’t give us any additional insight about the movie, but it does show us that there’s at least one really kick-ass machine gun. So, it’s got that going for it.

For more on film, check out our Avatar Comic-Con Footage Breakdown in which we’ve culled the responses from around the web to the footage that was shown last weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Avatar is in theaters December 18, 2009.

They just showed 25 minutes of footage to the Comic-Con crowd. They are showing 15 minutes of footage in half a month to anyone who cares to go to the theater for free.

It's time for them to start actually showing images from the movie. Not just of James Cameron standing around.

I'm starting to think that the footage seen at comic con is just a complete distraction from what the film is actually about... judging by the reactions of people, it looks good but doesnt seem like part of a feature film. My guess is that there is either a large portion of the film that hasn't yet been revealed, that might be flashbacks or some kind of other thing - or that the film is being held under such tight wraps that they are throwing us these shots in order to distract us from what really is coming!

Its simply a M-60 door mounted Machine Gun with a cowling over the barrel that extends the length of the barrel and a larger feed pan cover on top. Not a good job of covering it up as anyone who has ever carried or fired one can spot it right off the bat.
