The other Economics 101 Factor there is that when tickets are more expensive, it turns a certain percentage of people away who normally would have bought tickets. It balances out, although Avatar has clearly tipped the scales there.

my area theatre charges $10.50 for a normal ticket and $16.50 for the IMAX 3D (I think it's “just” $13.50 for the regular 3D).

People keep forgetting about the price to see this movie. To see this movie is 3d imax is around 15-20+ dollars american so if you think about it even, it out to the ticket prices around the time of the titanic the numbers would be less impressive

It's a fair point to make, yes. The 3D ticket prices are a big part of Avatar getting over the $2 billion mark. But there is something else to consider: Avatar is a movie that demands to be seen in 3D, or gives people a very good reason to see it in 3D. That's not something we've been able to say about previous releases with a gimmick. So yes, 3D helped Avatar. But only because Avatar was worth paying $3 more to see in 3D…

The theater in my area charges $7.25 for a normal ticket and $10.25 for 3D. This accounts for around 30 percent of the ticket cost. So if the movie made $2 billion with the cost of 3D, it would have made around $1.4 billion alone. Still a good amount, I'd say.

So how much would Avatar be making right now if it didn't have all those 3-D ticket sales to help it's over-all money intake? I realize that it's probably still a lot, but I think it would be a significantly smaller amount and no doubt wouldn't have passed the $2 billion mark w/o that extra $4-5 added to every 3-D ticket.

It seems a forgone conclusion that Avatar is going to get a Best Picture Oscar nod. (For no other reason that it's been such a juggernaut.)

I wonder how much of a bump in future weeks that nod will effect Avatar? Will it effect Avatar at all? Everyone and their sister seems stoked about the film, who has skipped it at this point who might be swayed by a nod?
