Terry Gilliam is overrated and frankly, untalented. Twelve Monkeys is praised by post-Fight Club era Brad Pitt fans, even though it has a weak and confusing storyline and an even worse conclusion. Tideland is prefaced by a video of Gilliam himself saying that people will either love it or think it's grotesquely offensive. I think the shock value of his films isn't enough to warrant their merit.

That being said...I still might give this a chance thanks to Johnny Depp and Heath Ledger, but even so, I have low expectations for this movie.

Come on Twelve monkeys, Baron Munchausen and the fisher king are good! and all since Brazil. I'm not saying he's a god just that he's made some interesting films and is worthy of some leeway.

@AnotherBREAK

I wasn't saying that money is the be all and end all just that there IS potential for this film. I'm Not There was fantastic and I don't doubt that Parnassus could go the same way and be a niche film - I just think that whoever releases it COULD market it wider. And I think Gilliam deserves more than the prejudge you gave him, it's not like were prejudging Disaster Movie here it's an interesting film of which little is known.

Also my mother has a dog called Scout and doesn't like Johnny Depp. And your talking like I'm a female Johnny Depp fan when in fact I'm just a male movie fan so if Hank's looking at me in that special way then I'm a bit freaked out.

making money doesn't always ensure a film to be remembered. (which was the point of
my first comment. I wasn't talking about some theater dork rubbing on their nerd boner
while watching this new potentially "fantastic" film.) This weekends box office number
one movie was Max Payne. That film may have taken in the most income, but in three
years the over all view of that movie will equal an over all, "who gives a shit." If anything
"Parnassus" will be more similar to "I'm Not Here" A feature I personally liked, but its core
audience was semi movie dorks (like most of the people wasting time writing in movie
blogs) And aside from that, Sure you are right I am pre-judging. How dare I do such a
thing on a web site called Film School Rejects. The name screams bitterness, and
sarcasm.

And I'm sure the studios would love for you to market their film staring Heath Ledger
and Johnny Depp. But Seeing it is Heath Ledgers final film and it is staring the dreamy
Johnny Depp, I think they would like for more people to see the flick, then just your
mother, her cat Krinkles, and that guy who bags your food at the grocery store, and tries
not to drool when he waves good bye to you as you leave the super market. Your only
going to pull in like $25 bucks. I mean thats if you charge your mother full price. Can't
you get her a free pass? what kind of prick charges his own mother? (by the way hank
from the grocery store came out of pitty)

Hrmph. Well, I don't know. I suppose it's possible Terry Gilliam could make a good film, but he hasn't shown much in the way of ability in... well, since... uh... BRAZIL?

*checks IMDb*

Yup. BRAZIL. But I mean, that was only 23 years ago.

Nothing like prejudging. Terry Gilliam's made some fantastic films and Johnny Depp will ensure it should make money - hell I could market it so studios shouldn't have a bother.

This film will become a trick question on game shows twenty years from now.

Host: What was Heath Ledger's final film he appeared in before his untimely death in
2008?

*buzzer*

Game show contestant: The Dark Knight!

Host: No, I'm sorry. It was Doctor Parnassus.

Contestant: what the shit is a parnassus?

Host: I don't know, nor do i care....Just like the movie goers in 2009.

(crowd laughs. Contestant cries while plotting his death)

I am even more excited. This is a beautiful shot, so much depth and richness. Heath's character seems complex. It is everything I would expect from another Terry Gilliam/Heath Ledger collaboration. How could this miss with the input of two such creative geniuses?
