Angelina Jolie Finds A Forensic Franchise With Patricia Cornwell

Angelina Jolie is considered to be the most bankable female movie star in the world currently thanks to recent films like Wanted, Kung Fu Panda, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.  Of course, those three and the two Tomb Raider films are the only bonafide hits out of her last eighteen movies (back to 2000).  What that says about the state of female movie stars and their bankability I don’t know.  Jolie already has a past franchise (Tomb Raider) and a current one (Wanted) in her filmography, but according to Variety she’s about to add one with even greater potential.

Jolie is joining with Fox2000 and author Patricia Cornwell to turn the bestselling Kay Scarpetta novels into a series of films.  There are currently sixteen books in the series which follows Scarpetta, a medical examiner in Virginia, as she solves crimes using her vast forensic knowledge.  The Variety piece seems to imply the first film won’t be based on a single book though.  That seems like an idiotic move to me when you have a built in audience for the series… why start with an original story not even written by Cornwell?

Have you read any of Cornwell’s books?  Do you see Jolie as Scarpetta?

  • Awesome. I love her.
  • That premise has been done to death, BONES, and all the other Forensic programs on TV now. I smell bomb in the making, sort of like changeling.

I read the first five or so books when I was in high school. I enjoyed them then but not sure if I would enjoy them now. I don't think films should be made after the series because, like Aleric said, the premise has been done to death when you take into account shows like CSI and Bones.

Never read the books, but Thank You Mr. Hunter for that picture. You are an officer...and a gentleman.
  • I have read all of the books and although i am not sure they need to make a movie as others have pointed out, if they do I believe Angelina Jolie is wrong. I love Angelina Jolie but she is not Scarpetta. Scarpetta should be older and blonder. I picture Natasha Richardson like myself.

anyone else wondering where her tats are in that picture?

Jolie is a DREADFUL choice for the Scarpetta character. I pictured Michelle Pfeiffer, Jodie Foster, Diane Lane, Meryl Streep or Helen Mirren in the role. Mature, classy actresses. I hope Jolie drops out of the project. She'd have been a great Lucy, tho.
