Angelina Jolie Catwoman Rumors Emerge, The Dark Knight Continues to Roll at the Box Office

Angelina Jolie as Catwoman? If you are a dedicated reader to this site, you will know that we love to start rumors — in fact, we have been known to say just about anything in order to stir the pot. But some things, we just can’t believe. Take this little rumor that has started courtesy of the folks over at IGN. Apparently Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman in the original Batman TV series, told the New York Daily News that she has knowledge that Angelina Jolie has inquired about playing Catwoman in the not yet announced third film in Christopher Nolan’s series. Here is what she had to say, to be exact:

Angelina would own the part. My industry friends tell me [she] has made inquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest.

Chances are that this is just another flat rumor that will not yield any sort of results, but it is worth a thought. Angelina Jolie in tight black spandex, adding a little sexiness to Chris Nolan’s series, one that has had nothing of the sort thus far. Personally, I am all for anything that has Mrs. Pitt in a tight outfit beating ass. As well, should something like this ever works its way into a movie, I am sure that Christopher Nolan and crew would find a way to make it fit without cheesing it up.

In related news, The Dark Knight is still trucking along at the box office — bringing in $333.9 million as of Tuesday’s update. It is currently 16th all-time on the Domestic Box Office chart and still resides at #1 on the IMDB Top 250 Movies of All-Time chart with a 9.2/10 rating. I think it goes without saying that people are responding well to the film.

Your thoughts on the prospect of Angelina Jolie as Catwoman?

I have no idea how so many people think that Catwoman is a serious character that should be portrayed in the Nolanverse. Are people on crack? How has that character ever been interesting or deep...or complex.
  • I'm all for it.
  • Selina Kyl has a really great backstory in some of the trades - when she appears as a prostitute that watches Bruce Wayne get his ass kicked in his first outting as a vigilante is probably the best. She's dark and brooding, and she definitely doesn't make sense for Wayne, but he falls for her.

It would be tough to bring that around at this point since he's already Batman - when he's becoming Batman her darkness attracts him. But she is a really good thief and a menace. Not a bad force against Batman either. Just leave out all the hokey "nine lives" cracks and cat puns, and you'll be solid.

As for Angelina in the part? No, thank you.

no no no no no no no no no no no. im sorry but i dont quite see Catwoman fitting into "Nolanverse". Even worse, casting Angelina Jolie!. people seem to losing sight that this is still primarily a frigging BATMAN movie...and the focus and spotlight should remain on Batman. Im sure casting Jolie will be a huge box-office draw but in terms of the bat-franchise that Nolan has crafted so far, i just cant see it working. COME ON!
Im all for the riddler. The theme for Nolanverse cannot accomodate Catwoman, who poses a VERY VERY minimal threat to Gotham as a well. But the riddler!...now we're talking.

oh i shud add: Selina Kyle will probably be in Bat3 in some shape or form now that theres no leading lady, what with Rachel Dawes now "in several places". Whether Selina will become Catwoman...we'll see.
  • Please leave Catwoman out of the picture, Jolie or no Jolie. Christopher Nolan's Batman is much more complex than her story can handle.
  • I think this would be amazing, especially given how the love interest storyline ended in
the last film, and you'll need something to take its place.

Simply put, Batman is in a pretty emotionally vulnerable state at this point, and injecting
a character into this world who truly understands what his lifestyle is all about (and
embraces it) would make a lot of sense.

However, you'd have to reinvent the Catwoman character, possibly make her a ninja too.
See, she wouldn't be a villain. Actually, the opposite. She fights crime too, but she again
challenges Batman's rules. She goes farther than he does, and she gets things done. But
ultimately we see the failing of her methods. I'd even go so far as to make her a wealthy
kid like Wayne. The appropriate ying to Bruce's yang.

The villain of this story would be somebody like the Riddler or Bane or the Penguin as
the bad guy. Personally I like Bane because of the Venom drug story line. And and we
come to find out that Catwoman is addicted to venom, and when she tries to kick it and
take on Bane, he breaks her back. So Bane could "break the bat" emotionally. This sets up
a climax where Bane is not only taking over the city, but has just killed the woman
Wayne has just started to fall for.

Would that be a worthy story line?

I don't think the Riddler will translate well into Nolan's world at all. He's a villain that belongs in a silly Joel Schumacher movie played by Jim Carrey. He's too cartoonish. In Nolan's world, Riddler would get his ass handed to him. As awesome as the Dark Knight was, I think Nolan will end up regretting not saving Two-Face for the third installment. Catwoman is the best and most obvious choice, followed by Penguin as a distant second, and I wouldn't go any further past that.
  • I don't see the Catwomen character in Nolan's Batman world! Actually I don't want to see it.
  • I don't know if I'm more against Catwoman in Nolan's Batman or Jolie playing the character...sounds like a shitty ending to a damn good series. The optimal storyline for the next film MUST include The Riddler played by a method actor or David Tennant. Either that or maybe Black Face, since he's equally as dark as The Joker.
