Hot from the vast space that is the infamous Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center, we have a little bit of breaking news. Tension in the room was think as J.J. Abrams took the stage not once, but twice to talk about his upcoming projects. First on the docket was his mysterious project, known as “1-18-08″. Though he did not reveal anything more about the film (title, footage, etc), he did promise plenty of awesome stuff over the next few months. He did show off the teaser poster, but if you are reading our Comic-Con coverage closely, then you would have already seen it.
Abrams did speak to “1-18-08″ a bit (or “Cloverfield” to some). He cleared the air, making sure that we know that it is not Godzilla. Speaking about the monster Abrams said that while Japan has Godzilla, that “we need a monster.” Could this be the great American monster movie? We all hope so.
Second, we were on to Star Trek. It began with the rising of the classic Trek theme and the introduction of a lot of people involved in the film. The real fireworks occurred when J.J. Abrams mentioned casting. And though they have not yet cast someone to wear the uniform of Captain Kirk, they did confirm that Zachary Quinto, one of the stars of TV’s Heroes would fill the role of Spock, originally played by Leonard Nemoy.
Mr. Nemoy was also on hand though, to announce his own participation with the project. Seeing Quinto and Nemoy on stage together was almost eerie; fans of the franchise should be pleased. The casting, oddly enough, seems very logical.
Are you excited yet, Trekkies?
You certainly should be.
