A Blurry First Look at an ‘Avatar’

Posted by Dr. Cole Abaius (cole.abaius@filmschoolrejects.com) on February 3, 2009

Film fanatics have been screaming about James Cameron’s Avatar since right around the time Cameron expressed interest in filming a Spider-Man film. This space epic where humans invade an alien culture by use of avatars has been long-sought after and a long-time coming with a long list of problems. Now that the iconic director has gotten the project past the green light, everyone else is trying to figure out what the hell all the fuss is about.

And these photos aren’t really going to help.

Fresh from the Market Saw Blog, you have your choice between small and clear:

Small Avatar

Or larger and blurry:

Slightly Bigger Avatar

It’s Mystique! The second image is one that’s been cleaned up and enhanced a little, so I figured I’d take my own shot at largifying and enhancing. I think I did a fairly decent job:

Robert Fure Probably Won't Be My Facebook Friend After This.

Since the enhanced alien image looks strikingly like an inebriated Robert Fure, people who are just now catching wind of the geeky excitement for the project will have to wait just a little bit longer for proof of how incredible the project will be. Just know that it’s been a passion project for one of the most talented working directors in the business going on over a decade now, and the technology finally exists for him to be able to knock it out of the park.

Several different website’s (including our own) have had sources confirm that an Avatar trailer will play during Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, so hopefully we won’t have too much longer to wait for a professional, polished look at what should be an incredible feat of filmmaking.

What do you think? Why do we even do this kind of shit to you?

  • So I'm working behind the scenes on the website preparing some reviews late into the night when I notice a file in our Media Library called "Robert Fure Probably Wont Be My Facebook Friend After This." And lo and behold, I find this. Believe me when I say this - I am inebriated and that is by far not the worst (best?) picture that could have come out of this.
  • Looks kind of like Abe from Hellboy. seems cool though. It's good to see a "passion" film being made on a big budget.
  • Need to see more of it to even have a decent comment. I like Cameron on most of his project, Titanic was the exception of course.
  • Have to agree, this isn't much to go on. Cameron's Children of the Damned was the other exception to the rule, AFAIK. Why do you do this to us? Because that's just the kind of friend you are. :)
