The Dark Knight Might As Well Just Play Around the Clock

The Dark Knight

Fans like to go to midnight showings of a big film. The opening night for some films has become an event. It’s exciting, a way to be one of the first to see a special movie, like The Dark Knight. But unless you already have your ticket to that midnight show you might be seeing The Dark Knight in the light of early morning.

Tickets for the first showings on July 18 of The Dark Knight are already selling out. When polled by Fandango 38 percent of ticker buyers said they were taking the day off to see the highly anticipated film. Theaters added shows at three a.m. and when those sold out they added shows at six a.m.

Some of this is driven by Heath Ledger’s acclaimed performance as the Joker. A drive has already begun to get the late actor an Oscar nomination. But the film has generated excitement from the trailers and clips which have been running online for months.

The first film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman series, Batman Begins, took in $200 million dollars and this sequel has been eagerly awaited by fans. The first film opened to a $49 million dollar weekend take. It’s safe to bet that The Dark Knight is going to shatter that number.

IMAX showings of the film are reported to be sold out with exception of New York City’s Lincoln Square Theater and I suspect that will sell out well before July 18. It looks like The Dark Knight will have a record opening.

What time do you plan on seeing The Dark Knight? Also, do you think it will break records on opening weekend?

July 18th, 12:20 p.m. I predict: Fri $80 mil, Sat 97 mil, and Sun 74 mil which equals $251 million. All just on opening weekend. It maybe quite much, but who knows... it just might happen.

I've had my tickets for the midnight showing for almost three weeks. I just have to stay alive till then...
  • It will definitely break some records... considering all the hype regarding Heath Ledger's performance *and* the film itself, as well as the fact that Warner Bros. had to create a 6 am showing because there were too many fans who were going to miss the midnight showings, yeah... it will *definitely* go INCREDIBLY well.

Me? I'll watch it on the 17 th... yup, I live in Peru, and the movie is going to be released on the 17th, not the 18th... we, an underdeveloped country, are going to watch the Dark Knight before the fans in the US... isn't that great? =D
  • I won't be taking off any work to see this movie but I'm definately going to try to see it opening weekend. I can't imagine it doing less than 80million opening weekend.
Too bad Heath Ledger isn't around to enjoy the success. Although his death added to the hype, this movie would still be a huge success. The early viral marketing started before his death and was planned long before the movie was even finished.
    Can't wait to see this!

  • Another reason the United States has to be jealous of Peruvians!
  • @ bmc, so you'll be bringing your mother to the movie with you? That's sweet.

I'll probably see it in a couple weeks when the theaters aren't so crowded.
