Maybe its just me, but you shouldn't even put a movie on this list of buying, renting or avoiding until you actually watch it. It should be noted that your pitch for the film is way way off.

I get that you haven't seen the movie past the first 15 mins, so you can't really recommend someone to buy it, but it is by far my favorite Coen brothers movie of all time. I might be in the minority in saying that. Without spoiling anything for those who haven't seen it, the opening has a huge impact on the rest of the movie.

Ahh.. I think your description of A Serious Man is off. “A Jewish man loses his lover in a car crash and has to decide if life is worth living. More like “A Jewish man whose wife loses her (other) lover in a car crash and he must decide if life is worth living.” I probably wouldn't even describe it like that. All these things happen to his guy who seems peaceful and living life when things go crazy around him and how he reacts to everything. Have you only watched the opening bit? Definitely take the time to watch the rest of it.

I saw the movie and I think it is excellent. Though I am not sure what the significance of the opening scene is.

I am not really sure how you can make a decision on A Serious Man when you haven't watched it in its entirety.
