The funny thing about Star Trek is that it has gone on for so long that you can be on the inside and the outside at the same time.

I will always associate the characters with who they played, but I am not familiar with characters and what went on in the original series. I am fairly competent with The Next Generation though, the difference is that in the original Kirk (Shattner) captained the Enterprise, and in The Next Generation Picard (Stewart) captains the craft. For instance if I were given a quiz on Star Trek I would chose the Borg over Klingons.

So while I am at home in discussing The Next Generation I am totally in the dark on the original series.

Well said. I certainly wasn't taking a shot at Star Trek. For me, the Falcon is more iconic, but that's not to say it's the same across the board. I guess at my age and never being a Trek fan, Star Wars has always been the franchise that I immediately associate myself with, and I've loved it since I was a little kid and played with the toys. Trek toys weren't what all the little kids were playing with at school and what they were seeing at the movies, so it was always a little bit out of my scope.

David G is right. The Vulcan Death Grip was a part of a ploy by Kirk and Spock, and did not actually exist.

And while I might be a bigger Star Wars nerd than Star Trek, I would agree most people recognize the Enterprise over the Millenium Falcon. It's not a slight against Star Wars. I just think the Enterprise is more of an icon in pop culture than the Falcon. It's like comparing a phaser to a lightsaber. People recognize lightsaber's hands down, even if they know the term phaser.

Im not a Trek fan by any stretch, but a friend once told me that the Vulcan Death Grip wasnt real even in the story. Apparently, Spock did this to Kirk when they were forced to fight. Kirk pretended to be dead, or somehting? Help us out Trekkies. Whats the real deal behind the infamous Death Grip?

Just to go a little further geek on you...

The phrase "Beam me up, Scotty," much like "Play it again Sam" in Casablanca, was never said in those exact words.

Also, the Vulcan Death Grip does not exist. It's a Nerve Pinch, which knocks you out.

I beg to differ about the Enterprise being less iconic that the Millennium Falcon.
